Hi all,
I would like to know has RedHat EL 5 been already released or is it still under beta version?
When will CENT OS 5 be available to the world?
You're first question could easily be answered by going to www.redhat.com.
Second, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting tired of people asking this list over and over when CentOS 5 will be released. Considering that no one is getting paid to do this, this is something that the developers do in their spare time. They probably have full time jobs, so give them a break or give them a hand. If you're not helping out don't waste the developers time by nagging them. Instead of asking when it will be released, be patient and keep an eye on the CentOS website or sign up to be notified of news articles on the CentOS website. I'm 100% sure that when it is released there will be some sort of announcement.

You must get tired easily. I've been on this list for about two weeks now (basically since RHEL5 came out) and I've only seen this question asked a few times. Regardless, since you can't control what other people know and/or ask, I suggest you learn to deal with it.

He never suggested that the developers were too slow, that they should devote more time to it, that they should devote less time to their real jobs, or any other criticism. It was an innocent question, so why don't you give Indunil a break?

I didn't see him demand that a "developer" answer the question.
And since it was his first time asking, how does that qualify as "nagging"?

Software releases often have a release schedule or goal; in the absence of one on the CentOS site (no, that's not a criticism) it's quite natural that one would join the forum and ask.
I hate to cross words with someone so early in my subscription to this list, but dude: chill!

I get tired of stupid people who ask stupid questions very easily. You're right I can't control what people ask, but it would be nice if they searched the message boards, mail lists or home page before asking. And yes it has been asked numerous times and answered. Since you're new to the list I would expect you do the same before you ask any question, not just when CentOS5 is being released. And there is a post on the homepage about CentOS5 Beta. Don't you think it would be logical that when CentOS5 is released that would be updated?
This is what happened when CentOS4 was released. But what was really annoying with RHEL4/CentOS4 was, RHEL4 was release the first day of LinuxWorldExpo Boston 2005 and I literally had over a thousand people who kept asking every day of the trade show was CentOS4 ready yet. RHEL4 had just been released an everyone expected immediate results. This is an Open Source project, not a business. OS projects don't have hard set release schedules, it's when the volunteers can help they do. Why can't people just wait? The beta is available if they want to play with it, but even if CentOS5 was released today pushing it into production so quickly isn't a smart thing to do.
So it's been two weeks since RHEL5 came out and he could have figured that out on his own. I could understand if it's been more than a month and CentOS5 hadn't been released, but give the developers a friggin break it's been two weeks. They will announce it when it's ready.
Here's something everyone should read before they post to a question to a mail list or forum. http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html Point number 1. Try to find an answer by searching the archives of the forum you plan to post to.

Like a lot of other things, the old answers won't always be right on this one. I think it would be worse if no one was interested.

Not to sound like a troll... but a quick check of redhat.com would have told you RHEL5 was already released.
As for CentOS 5... Anytime I wonder such questions I look at the list archives. You'll find:
http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-devel/2007-March/003372.html
It basically states that at "1700hrs UTC Mar 28th 2007" CentOS 5 went to "Final Freeze".
While this does not tell us when it will actually be released... it does tell you that things are getting fairly close. Much like when you asked your parents "Are we there yet?"... the answer is "soon".
Dave
Thanks for all

Covered in thread already.
When will CENT OS 5 be available to the world?
According to the bot in #centos on irc, CentOS 5 is currently scheduled for release April 9th. It may be sooner, it may be later but that is the irc advertised date the dartboard came up with.
