I have a local mirror of CentOS5 base and updates. Now with 5 having become 5.1 and in case I just want to keep on updating (at the moment) is it enough that I update the mirror of updates or do I also need an update of the base repo?

The base repo has changed - the hardlink for /centos/5 is now point to /centos/5.1 instead of 5.0. So yes, the base repo needs to be updated as well.
Thanks, ok.

I loop automount the 5.1 isos as base OS and just fetch the updates repos. This allows me to just keep fetching the updates. With each release I download the ISOs, adjust my automounts to point to the new isos, restart automount and begin updating.
