How about updating the serial number in the zone on the
source server?
That's the only place I increment the serial is on the
master server.
I shouldn't ever have to touch the zone files on the slave.

Are you running selinux on this box ... that can effect change permissions.
Also sometimes bind-chroot can cause issues if you are not setup correctly ... though it looks like you don't have that installed from your previous e-mails.
selinux is not running on either machine, nor is bind-chroot. THe odd thing is that deleting the zone file on the slave will initiate an AXFR. I can see the notifications are received in /var/log/messages, just nothing happens after that.
