What?! You don't do a full backup of all data every 10 minutes?!?!
That was the one thing I liked about having an ungodly expensive NetApp Filer back in the "good old days". The periodic data snapshots frequently got me out of this kind of situation.
As Lance mentioned, you used to be able to (in theory) recover data from an ext2 file system, but I was never able to accomplish that in practice on the couple of occasions where I tried.

Remount the drive read only, then go find the coroner's toolkit. Be prepared to learn more than you really wanted to know about file systems.
