hey guys,
CentOS has a stand at the LinuxWorld Expo, London on the 25th and 26th of Oct 2006. And we need some help!
We need a few people to come down and help at the stand, talk to visitors and generally spread the good word on CentOS! If you are interested and are able to come help, please get in touch with Lance ( lance@centos.org ) or me ( kbsingh@centos.org ) as soon as possible.

I can't currently help for any events in Europe, but if there are any upcoming events in Dallas, TX I would be happy to help out in anyway I can.

hi Dale,
is there any Open Source expo or event that takes place in your part of the world ? If you can get some details together - maybe we can request the organisers for a stand there ?
thanks for offering to help!

I'm coming with a friend for the 2 days to populate the booth. We're doing the arrangements now. Anyone knows a good (cheap) place to stay in the vicinity ?
Anyone having experience with showcasing CentOS at a conference like this. I figure that handing out CD's nowadays would not be very useful. But having some flyers or something with the basic information about CentOS would be nice.
CentOS flyer:
+ Short introduction + Website location + Wiki location + Mailinglist location + Overview of the different versions, technologies, advantages and differences with other distributions.
Should be professional, straight-forward and objective.
Do we have something like this already ? Do we have proper artwork for printing ? How are we going to organise ? Another wiki page ? :)
Any help is welcome. -- dag wieers, dag@wieers.com, http://dag.wieers.com/ -- [all I want is a warm bed and a kind word and unlimited power]

Well kb and I were at the show last year - iirc he had a sparc that didnt quite work - and we had an xinit server.
This year we could maybe show the 5 beta ...

Maybe not, but we do have some t-shirts and mugs

I think we have something that we did last year - will drag it out.

A flyer is a good idea, as are posters - we have colour laser , and an a0 poster printer, so can do the output.
Wikis seem good ...

I remember when I was at the Fedora booth on FOSDEM that it's hard to get attention with just a bunch of hardware that is doing something. Often what attracts people is fancy graphics or a presentation with interesting bulletpoints.
I'm not sure how crowded it is (FOSDEM is really crowded) and what facilities we have. I'm thinking of bringing my laptop, either to do some work when that's possible or to showcase something.
But it's nice to know what the punchline is going to be. If someone is leaving the booth, what points do we want to get through. There are so many things we can say that we have to stick to something simple and concise ? (And add to that whatever is in the context of the interaction)
I figure that handing out CD's nowadays would not be very useful.

Are there any posters or something big to put at the background ? How can we get a glimpse of bypassers if there's a crowd in the front of the booth ?

Ok, we can refine it depending on what the punchline is going to be.
Versatility ? Maturity ? (Long time stability) New technologies like virtualization ? CentOS as an appliance ? CentOS on the desktop ?
Do we have proper artwork for printing ? How are we going to organise ? Another wiki page ? :)

Ok, based on the feedback here we can refine it for FOSDEM and future exhibitions. It would also be nice to have a press-kit. (artwork, summary, facts and numbers, contact-person, timeline, new technologies, progress)
Anything worth putting in a magazin should be mentioned in a press-kit. Usually exhibitions like this one have an official press-area with the press-kits available.

Can I get edit access ? :)

LinuxWorld, unlike FOSDEM, is very much overshadowed by the commercial guys - the biggest, most flashy areas tend to be the guy guys like Redhat, IBM, Novel etc. And to quite an extent its driven by these commercial guys. Fosdem is a very different sort of setup.
Also, one thing from last year - lots of people ask about where / how to get help if they get stuck, so whatever handout we do - must include some url's for help/support.
I'm not sure how crowded it is (FOSDEM is really crowded) and what facilities we have. I'm thinking of bringing my laptop, either to do some work when that's possible or to showcase something.
We just get the stand, nothing on the inside of it - but we did get a few power sockets. Lance has some furniture, are you going to bring that along this year as well ?
But it's nice to know what the punchline is going to be. If someone is leaving the booth, what points do we want to get through. There are so many things we can say that we have to stick to something simple and concise ? (And add to that whatever is in the context of the interaction)
My usual punchline with CentOS is simple - IF you need the support and have big bucks to pay, goto Redhat, but all means. However, if you want something different ( like more filesystem support, more third party pacakges, dont want to / cant afford to pay much ) then CentOS is for you. Another thing that really hits hard and fast is the community. RHEL has almost zero community around it - everyone moved to fedora, and therefore unstable / short lifespan distro. CentOS on the other hand has massive momentum on the community side. I think its always important to highlight this.
I figure that handing out CD's nowadays would not be very useful.

Standing outside the stand, in the middle of the aisle that people are walking down - always works :)
Versatility ?
yes, you can do whatever you like with it and not have any change-in-support or change-in-circumstances.
New technologies like virtualization ?
i am not sure if we want to talk Virtualisation as yet - its not really there yet, in the core distro ( 4.5 will bring Xen, but its not due out for a while yet )

that would be nice, if someone was to start this section on the wiki, i am sure more people would get involved and kick in.

done! You should now be able to edit / add content ( remember the centos-docs list :) )
maybe we should have an 'Events' page on the wiki, and then sub-pages for each event that people are going to represent CentOS at.

Get the BSD booth babes in there :)
Though the one I know is in the bay area and won't be at a linux conference in London ...

I had an Alpha! that we did install to and was working, we did get some attention with it - but apart from the really old or the really geeky people, most people didnt understand what the excitement was all about! So, maybe I'd save something like that for FOSDEM and keep it just a public make-people-aware-of-centos thing at LWE, London.

I think maybe 2 posters should be enough, how many / what size for the flyer ?
is someone willing to help design it ?

How about copies of the article that Johnny Hughes did in Linux-magazine back in April?

Just last weekend I helped organize the Fedora Project booth at the Ohio Linux Fest. A picture during booth setup of what we had can be seen here:
http://www.elfshadow.net/ohiolinuxfest2006/img001.jpeg.html
It was a smaller 6' table/booth. We had a laptop running Core 5 that served two duties - a demo machine and when not doing that looping through a Fedora Core 5 "movie" of sorts that highlighted various Fedora features. We had DVDs on hand to distribute, which even late in the Core 5 cycle were pretty popular. We had handouts highlighting the OS features as well as a handout that offered some ways people could help the Fedora Project. We also had Fedora T-Shirts and stickers available for a small donation. And of course we had the big banner up behind us.
Overall our booth saw a good amount of traffic. The banner hanging out behind us with the T-shirts displayed just below it served well to let people see who we were even when there were several people talking to us.

I think a good example of a flyer is to look at Ubuntu's:
