I'm running KDE on C7, so why would I have a gnome-shell process spending rather a lot of its time in D mode?

Does it have anything to do with vim and "text editor" being almost unuseable? When browsing through text. I often see multiply repeated lines or lines with only small pieces nonblank.

Are you running GDM? The GDM login screen runs a gnome-shell as part of the login interface.
Not sure why it's in the D state (uninterruptible sleep) but that's most likely the source of the process.
