I hear that backuppc does *not* have a native *Doze client. On the other hand, I know amanda's been around a long time, and it does. Opinions on amanda, folks?

It works for me. I have three USB disks which are configured as 10 "tape" slots on each. I back up every few days to the disk, and about once a month take the disk into work and bring the oldest one back. Obviously the disk at home doesn't protect me against fire or theft, but it does protect against disk failure.

Martin

Our environment's a bit larger - I think we're talking about at least a dozen or so WinDoze boxen, and I don't know if my manager will want to do the rest of the Division if it works out, but....

That was my home setup - hence taking the disk *into* work. Amanda scales well though, it was designed to handle a university's (Maryland) network. You ought to be good for several hundred machines!
BTW - "don't top post" goes back to newsgroups and text mode readers of the 1990s. Most most modern software naturally leads to top posting which enables the reader to view replies in the preview screen without the need to scroll down. If a thread is bottom posting, I bottom post. If it's top posting I top post. If I'm the first to reply I choose.

Amanda works great in a Linux environment. I have not used Amanda's *Doze client, only mildly using smbclient, so I don't know if there are issues there. I don't presently have any MS-Windows machines that need regular backups.

It is simple to set up a rsyncd server under Cygwin / WinX to feed BackupPC. I normally install "full" cygwin to access rsyncd, but there is a limited client available.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/backuppc/files/cygwin-rsyncd/3.0.9.0/
From the readme:
"Download and run cygwin-rsyncd-3.0.9.0_installer.exe to install rsyncd on your WinXX client for doing BackupPC backups."
At one time, the prepacked rsyncd client did not work on Win7 and later, but I think that was fixed. Otherwise, install "full" cygwin and follow the instructions for the prepacked rsyncd client.

Good point about cygwin derrivatives. Would mobaxterm handle rsync OK? The only reason I ask is that it certainly works with Win7.
