where can i find the fbset package for centos 6
as far as I can tell, fbset hasn't been updated since the 90s, its a piece of history, I doubt it has any place in a modern X system.

That might be true, but I see its still packaged and available in Fedora. Its possible that it is completely nonfunctional, it looks like it has just been rebuilt without changes since 2009.
The latest fedora srpm for rawhide builds as an el6 package, so I suspect it's not changing that much.
I don't see anything on Red Hat's site mentioning it was removed.
However, it looks like 'busybox' has a fbset command. Does running 'busybox fbset' work for you?

Yes it does but has no affect on changing the console resolution Debian has fbset package and allows me to change console resolution Maybe RHEL/CentOS has not caught up Debian 8 is a bit newer

It’s not a question of what is “newer”. Fedora has ‘fbset’, and has had it since before CentOS6 was released, and continues to have it in Fedora 22 and Rawhide.
Red Hat decided not to include ‘fbset’ in RHEL6, and it isn’t built in the CentOS Extras either. It is simply not included.

It?s not a question of what is ?newer?. Fedora has ?fbset?, and has had it since before CentOS6 was released, and continues to have it in Fedora 22 and Rawhide.

Any insight into why it is dropped? Is there something about RHEL/CentOS that prevents this tool from being able to adjust the console resolution? Have they provided a new tools that gives the same functionality?
