Hello All. I have five Centos 4.4 x86_64 (amd fx-62) boxes with 4 gig of Corsair dual channel ram running kernel 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL (smp).
The sixth box is the same except for video card and ram. It is using 8gig of GSkill dual channel ram and has a very cheap ATI video card in it. This box will segfault on boot unless I use noapic acpi=off and nolapic. Even with these boot params, the box is not 100% stable. I have seen udev segfault right when booting and also when copying 15 meg files from /tmp to /usr will lock things up sometimes. Yum and Perl have gotten corrupted as well at different times. I have 5 fans in the box to vent heat and the BIOS reports the CPU running around 90 degrees Farenheit when rebooting.
I have run memtest86 (from Knoppix 5.1) all night long on the 8 gig of ram and it comes up OK. In the past, we have found problematic Corsair ram this way. This 8 gig seems to be OK as far as memtest thinks.
Today I will begin removing ram and testing to see what happens. Does anyone have some ideas what might be the problem? All the other five boxes with Corsair ram work fine.
Thanks
on the unstable machine..what mobo, cpu, nic, vid, hdd, etc etc etc.

<snip>
motherboard = nvidia kn9 (Nforce 4 Ultra) cpu = amd fx-62 (socket am2) nic = nVidia Corporation CK804 Ethernet Controller hd = seagate ST380815AS cdrom = LH-20A1P-186 ps = antec sp-500 video card = asus en6200le (nvidia geforce 6200le pci-e gpu) ram = Gskill f2-6400cl6d-4gbmq (4 sticks of 2gig)
I pulled a stick of ram out today just to try something different. I think that will take the mainboard out of dual channel mode. I hocked the nvidia-bug-report.sh script off another box to get the listing. I don't have the nvidia.com video driver loaded though. listing below will show 6gig now instead of 8. Also, I have a USB-> Serial adapter to get to a serial console on the box (headless right now).
Sorry so long, but want to be thorough.

Are you sure? The Abit KN9 does not use Nforce 4.
I know - Abit has made things confusing with the KN9, KN9S and KN9 SLI. The boards I have are the KN9 NF4 Ultra [0]. The other offerings are chipsets Nvidia 550 MCP [1], Nvidia 570 SLI [2], and Nvidia 570 Ultra MCP [3].
I can only imagine the marketing department at Abit is only a little less than schizophrenic these days.

Is the thing stable with 6GB without the kernel parameters? :D
I am asking because someone else reports using an Abit KN9 without any acpi or apic related parameters and having stability.

I tried running with all 4 sticks and the dram clocked down to DDR-667 without the noapic and nolapic params and it hurled after a short time. I was using the default BIOS settings originally (ddr-800) and started with the kernel parameters, so I would say it was unstable at ddr-800 as well.
Right now, it's been running for about 40 minutes (the Java install loop mentioned previously) with the dram clocked down to ddr-533. All four sticks are in and I ssh'd in and started another java install loop over the wire just to aggravate things. If this continues to run for a few hours I'll call it good enough.
I don't believe this to be a Kernel/Centos issue at all from what I've learned, so thanks for all the off-topic support :)

Thanks. I ran memtest86 off a knoppix5.1 cd for about 12 hours on all four sticks. It made 6 passes and did not return any errors. Perhaps I should have left it run longer?

I don't trust memtest86 for 64-bit mode kernels... I've seen examples of it running just fine for days, when the kernel barfs after an hours usage. It is just 2 machines, so not a large sample from my side.
Clocking down the memory helped in one case.

I do think a 64bit version of memtest86 would be a good thing... I'm unclear how a 32bit app could test memory above about 3GB unless its playing the PAE game (3GB because in a 32bit system, the PCI bus peripherals take about the top ~ 1GB for their I/O space, so the ram has to be mapped to a higher physical address, only accessible via PAE...

Yea, addressing is one issue, but I have seen problems on 1GB machines too. Mind you, memtest is probably right and the memory modules probably were ok. It is some combination of chipsets, memory and linux in 64-bit mode that stress parts of the entire memory system. That is what memtest is unable to detect. Few people run in 64-bit mode compared to 32-bit... still some snags to work in the chipsets/memory I guess.
In real life a "while true; compile kernel; done" loop would panic the kernel in 10-30 minutes. Memtest didn't find problems. Changing memory modules to a different brand or lowering clockspeed made the system stable.
As for 32-bit and testing... remember there is a big difference between address space and memory. You would just map the memory in the 4GB address range and test it, same method as you would do with PAE mapping - up to 64GB. But that is still big enough for most people :)

So all four sticks, clocked down and kernel parameters = A-OKAY (assuming it is stable)

:) When using noapic and acpi=off, it is a given that it is not a kernel problem. These parameters are to work around BIOS or other motherboard issues.
Feizhou wrote:

And noapic especially severely limits your computer... no advanced irq mapping or routing. For a server it is a no-go option, for a desktop it might be a temporary workaround.
If noapic and/or acpi=off solves a problem, it is just a help to pinpoint the problem, it is not a solution. The solution is to get the manufacturer to fix their broken bios.
Speaking of that... maybe OpenFirmware would be a solution? Never tried it myself on x86 class machines. Anyone with any experience?

Almost. Much to my dismay, the 4 stick testing went well but the BIOS screens occasionally hung during reboot through the course of the day. I finally just pulled the 4th stick and went home.
I've modified the rc3.d/S99local* script to just reboot every 10 minutes and compile a kernel and modules in between. I thought I'd heat things up a bit piping urandom into /dev/null as well.
I've got other fx-62 boxes running the same mainboard with all 4 ram slots full, but those are Corsair ram @1G each - the ram timings are different as well; 5-5-5-12 for the Corsair and 6-6-6-18 for the GSkill. Maybe the GSkill ram just isn't up to the task running Dual channel. I have the weekend to play with it so maybe I'll try two sticks in Dual Channel for a while and see what happens.
I'll post kernel compile times between the 3 sticks in single channel and 2 in dual channel :)

I bet the bios of the board is either not honoring the SPD settings of the memory, or the memory just isn't a good match for the board. I have had this problem before, and now I usually only buy memory that is on the recommended list of the manufacturer, especially on critical systems. It just isn't worth the extra trouble to maybe save a few bucks. Your time tracking down the problem probably has already gone over the difference in memory cost.
Scott Silva wrote:

or, the SPD data is bogus or overly optimistic, often a issue with offbrand memory.
re: motherboard recommended memory, the taiwanese mobo makers (asus, gigabyte, abit, etc etc) rarely even have any such recommendations published. I usually only find that sort of data on the US brands (Intel, SuperMicro, Tyan, and so forth), and, of course, the major server makers like IBM, HP, Dell, etc. only 'recommend' their own memory, which while expensive, is covered by factory service and warranty, and will almost certainly meet the systems specifications and requirements.
Things like motherboards are sold as OEM components, and it is assumed that the OEM will do the testing and qualification.
That all said, with AMD Athlon 64 and Opteron CPUs, the memory controller is in the CPU chip, not the chipset, so all the motherboard contributes is the board layout and DIMM sockets, and the BIOS configured memory timings... So, going with memory thats been certified by AMD is probably a good idea.
Unluckily, it doesn't appear AMD has much of a memory compatability program.... From their website, http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_869_9460%5E...
* AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Family Memory Guidelines*
In our ongoing efforts to support industry standards, AMD Athlon™ 64 processor-based platforms may be designed to leverage industry standard DDR unbuffered DIMMs. An independent testing company, Computer Memory Test Labs (CMTL), has conducted memory compatibility testing. CMTL is an independent test facility and is able to test RAM modules from different module suppliers. System builders should access the CMTL web site a www.cmtlabs.com http://www.cmtlabs.com and view the recommended memory module list for the specific motherboard manufacturer and motherboard model.
* Note*: The CMTL website is provided for informational purposes only, and AMD recommends that a system builder conduct its own testing and validation to confirm that the memory modules are suitable for its systems.

Do you need any of these kernel parameters on those other boxes?
I know this won't help the original poster right away, but I'm wondering if what's needed is a memory test that not only spins through the memory but also does DMA transfers back and forth to a disk, and/or other similar functions. It might also be useful to have a second thread exercising the cpu core(s) to "heat things up".
These are some of the things different between running memtest86 and running the OS and doing "something".

Good point. Memtest86 didn't find any problems for the 6 or so passes it made when running the 8gig in dual channel. Someone also mentioned memtest86 doesn't run the cpu in 64bit mode.

nah - the other boxes boot fine without the boot params. The problem box is running fine with the three sticks - I'll remove the boot params from grub at some point and see if anything changes.
Is this the only box with 8Gb RAM? Do the others have smaller amounts? Is the motherboard and BIOS the same? Are you running the same kernel?
Is the machine stable if you run it with mem=1024M on the kernel options line (so limitting it to 1Gb RAM). Do you need the hugemem kernel?

Other boxes run 4 sticks of 1 gig each of Corsair XMS-2 dual channel pc6400 ram. Some boxes are at Abit BIOS rev level 10 and some at 11. the 8gig box is at rev 11 (abit-kn9-kn9c11.zip)

I have not tried the mem= kernel param yet but I will probably remove sticks of ram 1 at a time to see what happens.

Have you tried to switch memory modules between two of your machines? ..would be interesting to see if the problem follows that memory or stays with the box.
It is using 8gig of GSkill dual channel ram and has a very cheap ATI video card in it.
Do you use fglrx (ati's kernel module). If so, does it die even if you don't load it?

I have not swapped memory modules for the Corsair ones yet however I have pulled one stick of the Gskill ram out to leave 6 gig now. Will see if I can reproduce the lockup with the 6 gig and keep removing ram until something changes. I can swap out the GSkill for the corsair during the weekend as the other boxes are in use during the day.
I have left the X configuration as default. xorg.conf shows vesa mode and the following modules (probably only used when vncserver is running on localhost?):

Hi All, Just a follow up. Pulling out one stick (2 gig) of the 8 seems to fix the problem.
I ran into the most problems while installing Sun's Java (jre-1_5_0_11-linux-i586.bin) while this is unzipping into /usr/local is when things consistently lock up. This is what I've been using to test things. There is sufficient disk space in the partition.
I bypassed the prompt during the install and made a loop that removes the jre1.5.0_11 directory and then just does sh -x on the jre-1_5_0_11-linux-i586.bin. Leaving this run will lock the machine within a couple loops. Removing 1 stick of ram , the loop continues to run at least for 15 minutes before I terminated it.
I've moved the ram around in different slots to see if it made a difference, as well as removed different single sticks to test. It seems the only thing that improves stability is to remove a single stick out of either the channel A or channel B slots.
On the last test with all 4 sticks in, this message was printed to my ssh session right before hurling.
oas kernel: Assertion failure in __journal_temp_unlink_buffer() at fs/jbd/transaction.c:1521: "jbd_is_locked_bh_state(bh)"
Hopefully this all makes sense to someone more knowlegeable than I.

Maybe this MOBO is just choking on the combination of the type and quantity of ram. Maybe the ram timing is just slightly under spec, and pulling one stick puts the board into single channel mode. Have you tried pulling a stick from the other channel also, so the board goes back into dual-channel mode, and testing again? You could also see if you can change the memory timing slightly with the 8 gigs of ram. See if the bios will let you turn off SPD mode and let you set timings manually.

I've removed two sticks from channel B, and just running with the matched pair in channel A. The java install has been running for almost an hour straight. When I get back over to the server room, I'll power it off and try the same pair in channel B to see how it goes.
Thanks for the SPD tip - I'll check that out as well.
I seem to recall there were some generations of Opterons where if you ran 3 or fewer banks (6 or fewer dimms, balanced for dual channel), you could run at PC3200 speed, but if you populated all 4 banks (8 dimms), you had to downgrade the memory bus to PC2700 or something. Could be you're running into something like this.

Also check the voltage req. of the memory. Maybe the board is under volt for the specific ram.

Thomas
Looking online, there are many pages that mention problems with DDR2-800 memory needing the voltages turned up to 1.9 volts. Something else to try.

I tried the ram at 1.9 volts (from the 1.8 in the BIOS) and it worked good on the bench for a few minutes, but after SSH'ing in however, it locked up soon after. I thought perhaps the nic is flaky, but removing a single stick of ram from the board seems to stabilize everything whether it's a console or ssh session.
I have the option in the bios of turning the ram speed down to 667mhz all the way to 400. I will try all 4 sticks at 400 today. There are a ton of other settings for the dram that I do not know what they do.
Found an article on google groups suggesting using all 4 slots is a crap shoot. Hmm..
