I run CentOS at home, not just at work... Anyway, I've got a friend in Chicago who recently mentioned that they'd like to do videocalling. Now, I've heard of skype, but a quick google says there's some problems on Linux. I also see ekiga, and aMSN.
Anyone here run such a beast, and have any recommendations or comments? Obviously, must work on CentOS, not Ubuntu, or Fedora, or TheLatestCoolestDistroThisMonth....

Skype works fine on CentOS.
+1 for Skype on CentOS 5.5, RHEL 6, and various flavors of Ubuntu.

So, how did you install Skype on CentOS-5.5? I tried using the Fedora rpm but got a failed dependency, on qt-4 I think.

I'm running Skype on Centos 5.5 OK without any problems :)
skype_static-2.1.0.81.tar.bz2
Which you can get from here:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/post-downlo...
Click on the 'Static' version below OpenSuse 11+ to download the tar.bz2 file.
This is just a compressed static executable skype binary, with supporting files, so it does not affect the RPM package database.
Unpack the bz2 file, and follow the installation instructions under:
/skype_static-2.1.0.81/README
I had to modify the path to the Skype icon in the /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop file, so XFCE4 can find Skype's application icon:
[Desktop Entry] Name=Skype Comment=Skype Internet Telephony Exec=skype Icon=/usr/share/skype/avatars/Skype.png Terminal=0 Type=Application Encoding=UTF-8 Categories=Network;Application;
Under XFCE4 desktop, Skype can be found at:
Xfce Menu->Network->Skype

Thanks for all the responses, folks. If I have any time, I'll pick up an inexpensive webcam, dunno, Best Buy or Target or whatever, and install skype Sunday or Monday, and let y'all know how it works later next week.

I believe google chat aka google talk works on linux too, and it has a video option. can't say I've tried it.

It works for me on Ubuntu/Fedora. Apparently some have gotten it to work on RHEL5/CentOS5 but I have not tried.

It's older on Linux, but not really problematic on a desktop. Shouldn't be anyway.
You can install the beta. The problem is that it's only available in i386 so if you have an x86_64, you have to install various dependencies.
However, haven't had any issues with it, aside from that of needing the 386 libraries.
