Greetings
Some time ago I briefly played with NFS. More recently with Samba.
What I am wondering is if NFSv4 is already integrated into Centos 4 from upstream.

if not, is there a timeline? Centos 5 ?
and... is or can NFS be a compatible yet better replacement for Samba?
thanks

Yes.

It's not compatibile with Samba. It is, however, a better networked filesystem for Unix.

Yes.
Yes... sorta. If you want to take advantage of truly useful NFSv4 new features like GSSAPI authentication then you actually need to build a custom set of packages for nfs-utils (>= 1.0.9)and its dependencies. Fortunately the changeset is small and doesn't affect any other aspect of the OS.
a late reply...

hummingbird makes an nfsv4 client for windows (and in fact they were a big part of the nfsv4 standards process) - but it's not cheap.

Holy blast from the past Batman! I haven't seen Hummingbird on a Windows box for like, 12 years. That idea of doing NFS on Windows is so old and decrepid, it's got a Santa Claus beard! (Thank EH, for that St. Nick reference).

RHEL 5 according the release notes has nfs v4.
Samba is best for windows clients IME. If you are sharing between linux/unix hosts then use nfx.
