yum install mysql-server
Also check for typos on the path. You wrote (both on subject and body of the e-mail) /etc/ini.d, and not /etc/init.d. Not sure if that was a typo on the e-mail, or somewhere else.

No it isnt because Red Hat Enterprise Linux doesnt 'bring it' either.
However CentOS 3.5 now has it as part of the install.

This is because in RHEL-3 mysql-server is not on the original ISOs. It is not in the comps.xml for install either. This was due to some questions in the licensing for MySQL AB. (Those issues have since been resolved.)
CentOS-3.1 through 3.4 followed this pattern as well and we added mysql- server to addons repository on the mirrors ... as this is what the addons directory is for. Items that build from the SRPMS but are not on the actual RHEL-3 CDs.
However, since not having mysql-server is totally ridiculous ... starting in version 3.5, it will now installable via the normal install.
