I need to replace my Abit BE7 board (cannot run the newer Linux) and keep my near new IDE HD's (250 GB). A D865GLC is new available that uses the Intel 865G chip set, but I have no experience in matching Mobo's with Linux.

My experience with Intel motherboards (in general) is that they simply work with Linux. D865* is an older series of Intel's motherboards, so I wouldn't expect any trouble with it. However, the hardware proved unstable if used with add-on PCI cards, and my experience with Intel's support is terrible.
For example, similar motherboard (D865PERL) would not power on if you stick 3 Intel's Ethernet cards into it, and Intel refused to even attempt troubleshooting the problem. All I was told was that the cards in question were for usage in "servers", and that D865* motherboards were for usage in "desktops", and that it is unsupported to use additional Ethernet cards in desktop system (even if they are made by Intel). You know, motherboard made by Intel, additional cards made by Intel, Intel claims it is not their problem if combination doesn't work.
The only conclusion I could make (from what Intel told me) is that PCI slots in their line of "desktop" motherboards are there only for cosmetic purposes. Don't try to put anything into them and expect things to work. Not even if the add-on cards were made by Intel.

Hi, I've got two machines running C4.4 on Intel D865GBF. Machines are running smoothly. D865GBF is very similar to D865GLC. CDs shipped within are for both "platforms". David Hrbáč
Hi all.. On my little test server I have 40GB hard disk. I use LVM2, with 4 partitons: /boot, /home, /usr, /var I set Apache to work in /var/www. Now I added a 30GB hard disk to extend /var. I regularly extended my volume group and the logical volume where /var stay. Now I need to umount /var to run a resize2fs to extend the /var partiton, but I see ever the same message: "device is busy" I tried to switch to runlevel 1, but no luck. My var uses quota, and the fs is ext3.
Someone can help me? Thank you a lot guys!

# lsof | grep '/var/' is your friend.
@Alexey Thanks Alexey! lsof now is my best friend! ;-)
@Guillermo Well, I booted my server whit Knoppix and I solved learning better how to use LVM... You know, this was my first time doing this kind of work on a LVM disk group. Learning by doing is my preferred way!
@Johnny fuser -m /var didn't tell anything, I tried to use it before ask this hel to you...
@ Robert ext2online... I don't know there was thi tool! Next time I'll remember...
Thanks all for the suggestions!!!
PS: now I'm syncing 30GB website, hopes goes all welll :-D

The Centos Live CD is also great for this, and it just seems so familiar when you work on CentOS servers all day. Like an old comfortable pair of slippers at the end of a long day!

Hi, it only comes to my mind, i am not sure this is the right way to do it, but have you tried with a rescue CD?

That is my thoughts too .. as /var is going to be hard to clean out after a normal boot.
(the logs open there, the locks dir is there, etc.)
You might be able to use either:
lsof | grep var
or
fuser -m /var
But in my experience ... making all the /var stuff let go is not so easy.

As I understand it ext2online is just as supported for resizing ext3 filesystems as resize2fs (assuming Centos-4). No need to unmount, just run: ext2online /var
I have done this successfully more than one time.

Like David Hrbáč, I have CentOS 3.8 running on a D865GBF motherboard. It's been my desktop workstation for over a year now. The only problem I've had with it is that I can't seem to keep the sound working -- the onboard sound device has never worked and the PCI sound card I inserted only works part of the time.
We have roughly 350 of these running CentOS workstation/servers.
They appear to work fine.
Thanks, -Drew
