In the past i have used courier-imap but ideally i want to use sieve

No. cyrus has its own mail store format. Which is similar to maildir, but ...
cyrus can authenticate against everything which can be authenticated against via pam (I use ldap), so mysql shouldn't be an issue, if there are pam modules to do that. That all works via saslauthd.
Cheers,
Ralph

ok thanks - so cyrus-imap cant be used with postfix if i use the inbuilt mail delivery of postfix?
Does anyone know any good how-to's that cover setting up postfix with cyrus?

Well, I use lmtp - which postfix and cyrus both speak.
For the other question see Akemi's mail.

if it's just for sieve, you can use dovecot. it's mostly "compatible" with courier.

hi - yes what i am trying to get working is server-side mail filtering and in the past with exim i have used cyrus with sieve. Can you tell me what dovecot will offer me to achieve this over courier?
thanks

think i am going to look at procmail but not sure how well that will work with virt users and domains

you must make your mind :)
if all you want is "server-ide filtering", then use maildrop which is part of the courier suite. since you already have courier working, adding maildrop should be trivial (it uses courier authdaemon). maildrop is flexible (more flexible than sieve since you can call external programs/scripts) and uses a pcre syntax (which is also more flexible and more generic than sieve, but is also more readable than procmail jargon).
