Hi, folks,
Since I've gotten a total of one response in days on the HP forum, maybe the collective mind here has an answer.... As I've mentioned in other posts, we have an HP dl580 g5 that started throwing ECC errors. But wait, it's worse: memory is mirrored.... And the thing is fully populated with 32 DIMMs.
I took my best guess, pulled the matching set of DIMMs, and took two off of one of the four riser boards to replace them. I find that the m/b *must* be fully populated before adding riser boards... *and* the riser boards are mirrored. So I had to pull two riser boards, the one I'd taken two DIMMs off of, and it's mirror.
Brought it back up, no errors. Then, Monday, I tried replacing one of the two, apparently good riser boards with one that I'd taken out, and had put the two DIMMs that I was guessing included the bad one.
I *still* can't provoke the error. Maybe it only happens when I have everything fully populated? (I've run stress to the point where all 2G of swap is used....)
Meanwhile, I'd joined an HP forum, and someone suggested that I really, really needed a BIOS update, and that would fix it. Sounds plausible. However, when I found the d/l of that, I ran into three things: first, the damn thing was an .exe, and they do *not* seem to have a .bin. Second, the "description" (laughable, at best) didn't seem to say anything about ECC errors, but whatever. Then there's the biggie: it *seems* to say that I have to install a previous BIOS update first... but I'm not sure. I would have thought it was a full package.
Now, as the system is long out of warranty, and there's no way the other Institute will spring to pay HP, they won't even talk to me about *anything*, so I'm on my own.
The upshot: does anyone here have a clue as to whether I can flash update the BIOS with the latest update, or whether I actually have to do the older one first?

I was just hoping for folks running any dl5xx that had flashed a BIOS.
And no, I'm not surprised folks don't have fully populated ones... please note the sucker's also got a RAID box with *two* RAID6 13TB filesystems....

I do not have experience with the DL580G5 however we do have several DL360G5 and DL380G5 units and the firmware upgrade should be a piece of cake:
1. Download the Firmware CD.
2. Burn it to disk.
3. Boot from the CD.
4. Answer a few questions and let it do its thing.
5. Bobs your uncle you are done.
It should not matter what the current firmware is.

Well, more like create a bootable flash drive and copy the .exe to it - there doesn't seem to be *anything* other than the damn .exe.

Is that like the Dell, where it "inventories the system", then *tells* you if it's for this hardware, and that it's newer (or not) than what's there?

It is does do an inventory to determine what is install and what needs updating then it will update all the firmware for the MB, cards, drives, etc. If I recall correctly you can run it in full automatic mode or do selective updates.

I have just remembered that the Firmware DVDs have been replaced by the new Service Pack for ProLiant (also bootable).

For the DL380 G4 series, the firmware update bootable ISO was Linux based and the SmartStart CD was Linux based. Boot using the Live ISO and there was a utility available that would create a LiveUSB version. No Windows was required whatsoever. i loved the way that most all firmware updates were accomplished from a LiveCD.

Can't seem to find one for the DL580 G5 - it may be behind a paywall. I've just worked around it by using unetbootin and freedos. Now I just need a maintenance window....

Then you can run the SP53272.exe file on that, it will give you the possibility to burn a bootable CD with the firmware code.
If you don't have a CD burner on the Windows machine you can transfer the .iso file from the directory that was created when the SP53272.exe is unpacked, it will be in "ROMPaq CD/ROMPAQ.iso".
You don't need Windows on the dl580.

had to do this last week on a dell something or other.... after way too much failed trial-and-error, here is what i did:
$ bunzip2 Downloads/FreeDOS-1.1-USB-Boot.img.bz2 $ sudo dd if=Downloads/FreeDOS-1.1-USB-Boot.img of=/dev/sdb * unplug/plug * $ cp Downloads/O380-A07.exe /media/FREEDOS1~1A/ * reboot *

Only for making the floppy or other image.

For kicks, I downloaded a BIOS update for an old(er) HP system I own... While you run the software on Windows, it is a FreeDOS bootable floppy image. Now that I've got a bootable floppy, I clone it with dd to an image file and I could PXE boot it.
I'm not quite sure why HP didn't just make a floppy image and distribute that back then. I keep a USB floppy drive and one Windows system (dual boot laptop) around just in case for situations like this.
