Immense impact, I'd venture to guess performance would drop by about 100%.
(In other words it wouldn't even boot)

It doesn't go this way. You can use the 32bit version on the x86_64 systems, but not the x86_64 on the 32bit machines. The installer for the 64bit version should bitch about not supporting LONG, and then refuse to do anything other than reboot.
