Hey Y'all,
Does CentOS have a desk top switcher similar to what you find on Fedora?
A friend of mine want's to be able to switch between desktops. I've only got Gnome installed on my machine so I don't switch. A search of Google turns up reference to CentOS 4 for desktop switcher but I don't see anything for CentOS 6.3.

its built into gnome, you can enable as many virtual desktops as you like, and move windows onto any of them. they should up as little boxes to the right end of the bottom toolbar (taskbar?). I forget if it comes up with 1 or 2 configured.
I forget offhand how you configure them, but its not hard to find.

You can enable it via Desktop Effects, it is located under System | Preferences | Desktop Effects. I believe it only works with 3D graphics card which is pretty much standard these days, however if you are using NVIDIA Optimus cards with bumblebee installed you will only get two compared to four desktop/workspace.
Yep, built into GNOME. Either use the workspace switcher applet on the lower panel _or_ the keyboard shortcuts [0].
Ctrl + Alt + left or right arrow by default for GNOME2. Recent versions of GNOME (version 3) use Ctrl + Alt + up or down arrow by default.

The OP is for sure speaking about
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/acls/name/switchdesk
Not switching between virtual desktops but pre-login selection between various desktop environments.

Yes, this is what I'm referencing. Virtual desktops are common to all Unix/Linux GUI environments that I've seen. The switchdesk application is available for Fedora but does not seem to be available for CentOS.

This image is of the Stella GDM not CentOS but it does demonstrate what I'm talking about.
To clarify my original posting, I only have the Gnome desktop installed on my machine. I do not have KDE, or any other desktop, installed, just Gnome. I do not see a session selection on my systems GDM panel.
What I want to know is this:
If I have multiple installations does CentOS also support the same session selection option on the GDM panel as is shown on the screen shot of the Stella GDM?

I'm not sure about Centos 6.3, but for 5.8 it's in the base repo:
Available Packages Name : switchdesk-gui Arch : noarch Version : 4.0.8 Release : 7.el5 Size : 137 k Repo : base Summary : A graphical interface for the Desktop Switcher. License : GPL Description: The switchdesk-gui package provides the graphical user : interface for the Desktop Switcher.

That's my issue. I don't see switchdesk

Can I assume that I will not be able to select my chosen environment from GDM if I have multiple environments installed to choose from?

Yes. If you do a "yum groupinstall 'KDE Desktop'" (or any other DE/WM that adds an entry into GDM - e.g. windowmaker, icewm etc) next time you use GDM it will offer you that selection dialogue.

Thank you for the clear and meaningful response Y'all. I really appreciate your help.
Wait ... what do you mean by desktops?
Workspaces or Desktop Environments? Your reference to only having GNOME on your machine is unclear.

I'm confused as are you. Gnome3 is unavailable for CentOS at present. Clive
To choose which desktop GUI system to run, use:
Name : switchdesk Arch : noarch Version : 4.0.8 Release : 7.el5 Size : 7.6 k Repo : installed Summary : A desktop environment switcher for GNOME, KDE and AnotherLevel. License : GPL Description: The Desktop Switcher is a tool which enables : users to easily switch between various : desktop environments that they have installed. : The tool includes support for KDE, GNOME, XFce4 : and twm.
In a particular desktop GUI environmet you can set how many virtual desktop sessions you want to run, and under XFCE you can run the xfce4-panel command, to give you a nice set of virtual desktops to switch between.

I was comparing GNOME2 usage to GNOME3. I'm aware it is not currently an [official] CentOS package.
