we run CentOS 3 and 4 on acer's altos server platform without any problem. The management tools and resources available for Linux aren't half as comprehensive as dell's though. Turn around has been with one week here in Australia, but i imagine it changes from territory to territory and depends on stock etc.

For dirt cheap commodity rackmount boxes, I use www.8anet.com. For datacenter use, I pay through the nose for HP/Compaq proliant rackmount systems. I've had some somewhat annoying experiences with Dell so I don't buy anything from them, either on the desktop or in the server room.
Cheers,

We use IBM hardware almost exclusively at work with great success. Don't get sticker shock if you price it online. Call a vendor and they'll work with you on pricing.

We just purchased a 3U server from http://www.serversdirect.com/ - 3ware 12port/SATA, Supermicro motherboard, etc. The build quality of the machine is top notch and it inspires confidence; CentOS4 worked with every component out of the box. They get my seal of approval, and have good prices.

Acer will provide the most popular flavors of on-site parts and labour warranty just like dell and the other tier 1 hardware suppliers.

I've been buying from http://www.siliconmechanics.com/ for years and have always been *very* happy with 'em. They're willing to work with you to make sure you get what you need (even if it's not on the site), and their support has always been top notch. On-site support is available as an upgrade to the standard 3-yr warranty. Good people.
