Hey all,
After seeing the horrible lack of support for Promise cards in Redhat Enterprise/CentOS, I am looking for a recommendation for a good IDE RAID controller that is supported out of the box (i.e. I would prefer not to have to install via a driver disk).
I would prefer ATA 133 over Serial ATA for now.
Thanks! Sean
I'm using an older 3ware 6400 series card and it works right out of the box. I hear most of the 3ware cards are fully supported out of box.

We use 3ware 8506-4LP and the 8006-2LP cards which are SATA. They work wonderfully. We had used highpoint cards, but getting them to work was difficult and the performance was not very good.

As others have already stated, 3ware is pretty much the way to go. Their drives have been in the main kernel for quite some time.

I have been looking at the Dell Poweredge sc420 for some time. It has a built in sata controller that supports raid 1,2. Dell also says that this system supports RHEL ES3.0 Anyone have any luck running raid on this server out of the box? Anyone have any other option advise for a system in the same price range that would be a better solution than this. The server would be used as a file server for a business with about 5 users. Starting price for the server is, $299 and comes to $430 w/tax and the options I am looking at. Details can be found here. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W3...

If you want to use IDE we recommend the 3ware 7500 series and they work with CentOS without any changes.
If you are looking for SATA we recommend the 3ware 9500 series for performance. This card does require some work to get it installed and running properly. If you need help doing this we can provide the needed explanations and guidance.
You did not mention what Raid level you wanted to run, how much storage you needed nor what system this was going into.
If it's a single or dual 32 bit athlon or opterons running with 32 bit Centos the driver disks for the 3ware 9500 series are on our web site.
