Has anyone built an rpm for xboard for CentOS 4? I looked in the EPEL repo, KBS repo and rpmforge but none exist. The KBS repo has gnuchess in testing but what good is gnuchess without xboard? As usual the fedora SRPM for Fedora 6 and Fedora 9 cannot build on CentOS 4- they might build on CentOS 6 but i have no time machine :).

There is an RPM for Fedora Cors 9. http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/fedora/devel/src/xboard-4.2.7-17.fc9.src.html
You can try to rebuild it from the source RPM yourself.
See here for help on how to do this: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/RebuildSRPM
Let us know how that goes!

You did not read my post properly? Fedora rpm needs a lot of things updating.

There are some very helpful people in the UK on this list. I am sorry that you have such disdain for newbies. Not all of us were born knowing everything.
To the many many people on this mailing list who are extremely helpful, to me and others, you have my sincere appreciation. I'm sure that the others who do not find everything intuitively obvious are also very grateful for your time and help! My belief is that even the gurus on this list learn new things, from time to time.

I posted in the other thread that I did not want to hijack the thread begun by "tech". I was amused that the other person had a similar problem, in Perl, with a "hello world" problem and I posted that I was having the same problem, with C++.
- Trim your responses.
That I could have done. I should have eliminated the code that I included at the bottom, but, I thought possibly someone else on this list would find that C++ book very useful, especially since it can be downloaded, free.

I've noticed Lanny's name on posts going back as far as my own (rocky-start) membership on this list, and I find it hard to believe that he could still be considered a n00b, except, perhaps, by comparison to some with 10+ years (or way more) with computers, Linux, CentOS, etc.
Then there are some whose names are not even in the archives yet....

Vandaman just began posting in this mailing list and he is already Chief of the Mailing List Police? I certainly consider myself a newbie with regards to Linux and trying to get my head around C++ (OOP) is not easy, because I began with Assembly Language, Machine Language and Fortran. Using Linux at home, as I do, is not the same as using it at work 40-80 hours a week, as a bunch of the wonderful people on this mailing list do.

* cough *
The Chief of the Mailing List Police on ** any ** mailing list is those persons with access to the 'mailman' configuration, or deeper magic via the ability to set procmail rules and such.
If it comes from someone with a working '@centos.org' return email address, they might be 'on the force'

Russ: LOL. By your definition, Vandaman is not a member of the police force. Not only is he not one of the wonderful hardworking Developers, he just began posting on this list. Lanny

This sounds like me (except for the Fortran bit). I even think that COBOL is new fangled stuff. This "senior citizen" doesn't mind being called a newbie.
I have made some progress but am still frustrated.
I took the suggestions made here. I put the CGI stuff in var/www/cgi-bin/. I double checked my permissions and http.conf file but ....
I can run CGI routines mostly OK but I cannot set a cookie. I am using one of the simple set cookie routines from the net. It does everything but actually write the cookie. Other sites are storing cookies so I know the browsers (IE and FF) accept them. I can run routines that print all the ENV variables OK. I can use the random number function to set the cookie value OK. Just no cookie.
The only error in the error log file comes from mod_mime_magic and seems to be there even for routines that just read cookies.
I have other things not working such as installing the commerce cgi shopping cart using the automatic install program they provide. I get the first page OK but when I click on continue it just refreshes the page. It should POST a form with a name that is tested for with an IF. The new name should cause a jump to a subroutine that loads a new page. The name is blank so the IF falls through and reloads the same page. The browser knows that form data has been sent because a page refresh warns me that the form data is stale and must be resent.
Where do I go next?

That sound like an (exec) problem there to me. I don't really know your skill with linux but you may need to define the (exec) option for the apache configfile "httpd.conf". It all could be leading from file permission problems. If you were running SELinux and now you not, you may need to run "./autolabel" on the system. One more thing that comes to mind there seems to be some type of Bug or Problem when using the GUI to set the file permissions. It does not not always do a chmod -R or chown -R as in apply recursive permissions to all the file contents in a specific folder
One last thing is how are you running the "cgi-bin" contents? Through Apache, Mod-CGI, Fast-CGI or Mod Pythons CGI? Apache needs to be the folder owner witch I take it, it is from you saying it does work on a few things?

John, Thanks. I have the apache (http.conf) file directory options set with "Exec" for CGI. Apache is not currently the folder owner; root is. I will change the folder ownership as you suggested and test again. It works on many things and only fails on a few. Set cookie seemed to be the simplist and most straight forward to fix; so, I chose it to work with first.

I had a class in COBOL. They are still using it and I see jobs listed for COBOL. Those of us who don't work with these things all day, every day, will probably always be newbies.

Try http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
If you can't get what you need there, someone can probably point you to another web site. I remember a couple of things about Apache for our web sites on shared hosting that were hard for me to get right. It's like anything else, once you know how to do it, it's easy.......

Thanks.
I have gone and posted there.
To comment on some other suggestions I received here:
Setting the folder to apache did not fix the problem.
SELinux has not been run on this system.
I had noticed some funny things with setting permissions using the GUI. I went back and made sure I did them over again from the command line. It still fails. I believe that Exec is set right in options. Many things work ok. Only some things don't

All those would be available in CentOS 5 >:)
If you still can find xboard for Fedora 3/4 somewhere - that should be rebuildable.

the latest version of xboard is now also in kbs-centos-extras-testing for centos-5 ( based on the fedora10 rpm )
