This just started happening this evening.
a little history: way back last year, or thereabouts, I posted about a weird problem I was having. over the course of 2 or 3 days I figured out how to fix it, but not what the cause was. the fix amounts to navigating to my user's .local/share/mime directory and removing the file named "globs".
So, back in the present: this evening that same problem recurred for the 3rd or 4th time since the original event mentioned above. so I deleted that file, logged off and back on (without the log off/on, the problem still occurs).
Having done that, I went to fire up firefox and KABOOM!! X dies and I land back at a login prompt. several times. every time. tried running firefox from a terminal but I don't see anything echoed to the terminal before it is blown away.
I still have the tarball from mozilla.org, so I moved aside the directory where the firefox runtime stuff is, re-extracted the tarball and it still croaks in the same way.
I'd appreciate some ideas to try, if anyone has any. Thanks in advance!
In the meantime, Opera works (though I can't install 12.0.2 for lack of a suitable version of rpmlib, so I'm not left browseerless.

Trying to start firefox in safemode makes no difference. still instant death.

Oh yes. DUH. Of course. sorry, senior moment causing me to completely blank out on the thought of looking at logs.
FWIW, Firefox 14 works fine....

No, it doesn't. Perhaps I need to reinstall the Nvidia driver. but it's weird that everything seems to just work except for FF 16.0.1.

FF 16.0.1 from the mozilla site crashes X on CentOS 5.8 32-bit and 64-bit if the latest NVIDIA drivers are installed (304.51). If the older drivers (295.71) are used, it seems to be OK. It's also OK if the NVIDIA drivers are not used. Also seems to be OK on CentOS 6.3. I haven't tried older revisions of the 304 series driver.

So, I reinstalled the same Nvidia driver (290.10) and now FF 16.0.1 works! Go figure. I guess some file may have gotten hosed, somehow.
At around the same time I got a notice from mdadm that my raid array had thrown out one of the pair of drives, so I suppose it's possible that the drives were out of sync when that happened. doesn't seem too likely, though, since that Nvidia driver has been in place for several months.
neverthelss, FF is now working (and I just ordered a new drive from newegg to fix up the RAID array) :( :(

The reason is that the NVIDIA installer overwrites some distro files with it's own version of some libs, in this case the offending file is /usr/lib{64}/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
So you install the nvidia drivers and everything works just fine, for months.
Then last week an update was released for xorg-x11-server-Xorg which in turn re-overwrites the nvidia lib with the distro lib and you see the error you reported earlier along with the symptoms you describe.
Then you reinstalled the nvidia drivers which of course over wrote the newly updated distro version of libglx.so (again) and everything was back working as before.
The solution is not to use the NVIDIA provided binary drivers but instead to use the same drivers properly packaged by elrepo for your distro. The elrepo rpm package installs these libs to a separate directory where they will not conflict with the original distro libs and you will void this type of mess. Not to mention you don't need to reinstall the drivers every time there is a new kernel update.

I highly recommend using the elrepo NVIDIA drivers ... Its easy and it has always "just worked" for me.

OK, that makes sense. Further testing showed the problem here to be dependent on whether the machine was rebooted and the new NVIDIA drivers installed before or after xorg-x11-server-Xorg was installed.
The solution is not to use the NVIDIA provided binary drivers but instead to use the same drivers properly packaged by elrepo for your distro. The elrepo rpm package installs these libs to a separate directory where they will not conflict with the original distro libs and you will void this type of mess. I'm sure this is a good idea. but I've been doing it this way for soooooo long that I tend to not think of it until I've already done it the old-fashioned way. (we get set in our ways when we get old! :) )

yup, it sure does. However I didn't think of it being only a GL problem until afterr I had already reinstalled Nvidia stuff. but I imagine it's pretty likely that any of those proggies would have tripped over the same problem.
