! I just installed Centos 4.1 (i386) on one of my test drives.
When ever I try to logout of a Gnome session, it seems to hang but if I wait about 4-5 minutes it will usually logout, although I have had it hang a couple of times (never logs out).
When I do an ALT-TAB-F1, and log in as 'root', I can see the following processes still hanging around after Gnome finally does logout:
/usr/libexec/gam_server /usr/bin/ssh_agent -s
For every log in session I try, there is a copy of the 'ssh_agent' still hanging around after Gnome finally logs out.
Could this be what's causing the problem?
KDE logins will also cause these two programs to hang aroud, but it will usually logout in a timely fashion.
Any help would be appreciated.

Had similar problems in FC3 and the culprit seemed to be rhn-applet. Solved it by doing: #rpm -e rhn-applet

greetings,
isn't it better to
yum remove rhn-applet?
what specific concerns are there in removing anything with or without rpm or yum etc?
kind regards,
- rh

removing things with yum or with rpm are both OK ... just not removing files directly. As long as the RPM database gets updated, all is well.

Hi Sudev! What exactly is the purpose of 'rhn-applet' ?
rhn-applet is the little check-mark (or exclamation point) beside the date that tells you whether you need updates. It usually works OK, but can hang up.
I use it on all my installs without any issues, but there have been problems with it on all platforms in the past (on RH like OSs). To be honest, I don't usually log out unless I am rebooting after a new kernel install on any of my machines :) ... but I don't have any issues that I can see.

Any ideas as to what might be causing it to hang up? This is a fresh install of Centos 4.1 with nothing special done to it.
Gnome logout take about 4-5 minutes to complete (if it doesn't hang).

I ran 'rpm -e rhn-applet' and that solved the problem with the Gnome logout hangs.
Howevr, when executing the rpm command as root on a terminal screen (ctrl-alt-F1), I got several 'dma BadCRC' error messages but everything worked ok. I also installed the kdegames rpms off of the Centos #4 disk ( rpm -iv kdegams*.rpm) and got several 'BadCRC' error messages also, but everything installed and works ok.
Should I be concerned?

BadCRC is not related to rpm, it is related to your disk IO. It is not necessarily fatal, the data should be re-transfered.
You should check you cabling and just to be safe, run a SMART test on your disk.
John.

I have two CentOS desktop installs. One hangs on logout, the other works OK. Was never able to figure out why, but wasn't too concerned either (I'm the only user and practically never log out, unless doing reboot).

As other have pointed out it is update watch applet. I think in the boxes that do not have proper DNS setup or connect internet through proxy only this applet goes into hand and slows down logouts. I am on a machine right now where there is no problem but in the other machine at home (behind a proxy firewall) removing the applet speeded up the things.
