This is really disrespectful to talk about on here. The devs spent a ton of their spare time to develop centos, last thing you should talk about is starting competing projects...
Peter.

Erm, the dev(s) *suggested* using an alternative distribution. The stated aims are different, so it isn't in competition any more than RedHat is with CentOS. As for off-topic, possibly... but it wouldn't be the first time an OT subject has been allowed on the list.
I really don't get this list. The threads I have read on the Xen list suggest there is no problem with a discussion about the relative merits of KVM so why is everything so personal on this list? Something quite unhealthy is going on here, IMHO.

Its not that at all (to me).
Then again the Xen lists don't have ppl whining about a missed rel date with personal attaches about leadership.
The guys maintaining Centos have ownership of the project which results in a sense of pride and personal feelings about it.
Plus, I think it was the timing of the post regarding DAGs RHEL like project.
There is an order of magnitude more traffic on this list then on the Xen list.

I guess people are pretty happy with the way the Xen project is run.

They have every right to be pride; no doubt a phenomenal amount of work goes into CentOS and I don't think there is much/any gripe on this list of the quality of the finished article. But of course, pride can be an inhibitor as well..

Tensions are indeed running high, so yeah.

Erm, jury's out for me as to whether that would make a difference or not.

Well, I mentioned this to account for the social aspect. The more ppl who are on the list, the greater the dynamics of the list.
I think technology is more about ppl then tech itself so the social dynamic is a very tangible and important factor of it all.

There is no DAG RHEL like project.
It's a tweet. If I would ever start a DAG RHEL like project, I wouldn't announce it over twitter :-)

I am sure if you do then you will have a mailing list on which your fanbois can post that they want to give you money.
But this list is not for that purpose.

No, it's not; it's also not Dag's fault that someone else started this thread about his potential project, and I apologize for implying otherwise.

Once again an unnecessary personal attack. If anybody round here has fanbois, the CentOS devs! Not language I would normally use but I will do so in this case to illustrate a point.
If anybody flames me for this comment, go right ahead... it would just go to prove the absolute hypocrisy (and fanbois!) that exist on this list.

Nonsense.
Yes, fanboi is a denigration, although more at the people who think highly of Dag than of Dag himself. It was unworthy of Johnny. And this thread is all about something that doesn't exist, and nobody is trying to make exist. It's about the web-footed boogeyman in the closet that nobody living at the home ever alleged was there.

CentOS has plenty of fanbois, and I would expect them on this list ... it is a CentOS mailing list after all.
My point is, this is not the place to talk about Dag's stuff. It is not a place to talk about Scientific Linux. It is not a place to talk about Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It is not a place to talk about Fedora. It is not a place to talk about the growing budget deficit, unemployment, Jesus, the Pope, the top movies of the week or any number of other things that all are fun to talk about.
This is the CentOS General Discussion list. It is for talking about CentOS.

It may be that no such project exists today, but if a truly open and cooperative EL rebuild effort existed, it might be good for CentOS.
SL does not hurt CentOS and there is some interchange and sharing of knowledge. Their goals are somewhat different, and they have a growing team of paid developers, but they address many of the same issues, and Johnny has mentioned looking at their packages.
An independent volunteer EL rebuild effort could help attack some of the rebuild issues without interfering with CentOS processes; but technical interchange could be mutually beneficial, particularly if the projects were not mutually hostile. A bit of healthy competition might not be a bad thing either.
Phil
P.S. Just saw Johnny's post about the OT nature of this thread pop up as I prepared to hit Send, but given that I have mentioned CentOS in every paragraph I will do so anyway. :-)

You have a point, but dammit - The world is changing. People expect access to information when they hit the internet. As far as I see it, if Dag wants to start his own project, he has my support, and buckets of people from the RPM using world.
CentOS is an amazing project - but the truth is CentOS has it's own objective, which what I understand is to maintain 100% binary compatibility with RHEL.
I love this objective, but to be honest, as people who use open source software, we above others should really understand that there is more than one way to skin a cat. If Dag can get 100% binary compatibility with an open build process that others can follow easily and contribute to, you can bet your first born child that I will be there!
And to be honest - without competition, without urgency, where is the motivation?
My final point is, does it really matter who gets us to the goal of 100% binary compatibility? I see that as a challenge. I really wish I had the knowledge to get going on this - It's a noble goal, and that goal, rather than the methods used to achieve it should take priority. We should get as many people on this as possible.
HEY ORACLE! We know you've been riding on RHEL all these years, get some of your devs to give some free time dammit! :)
