I have about $1200 to spend on 2 boxes and I'd like them to be identical. Very basic web serving, simple HTML5 video, light email serving. Looking around NewEgg, I come across:

These use ECC unbuffered RAM which is expensive but I did find 8gb sticks for under $70 each: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820613386
I'd still have to add hard drives and more RAM and 2nd GB NICS. I also found out the power supply is non standard so if it goes in order to put in a standard power supply you need an adaptor: http://www.moddiy.com/products/IBM-Lenovo-PSU-Main-Power-24%252dPin-to-14%25...
I haven't purchased hardware in 2 years. I could even use a desktop system versus this "server" class. I feel like by time I add more to each box to make it run perhaps there is a better machine to buy?
Anyway if anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it. These are personal funds, I don't want to make a poor decision.

nice low power efficient boxes that hold 4 3.5" SATA hard drives. you can put up to 2 x 8GB dimms in them, and they have 1 short PCI-e slot.

Isn't the iLO access on the HP Microservers restricted once an OS is installed on the device? [0]
I read somewhere about needing to purchase an iLO license to allow full functionality. I got the impression that the iLO functionality that was available was really only helpful for installing an OS ... and not for Serial Over LAN once the OS was installed. (Is that right or wrong?)
Best I recall the author did not mention anything about a RAC card (so it was not likely that separate part/device).

I have the earlier version Microserver, it doesn't have any iLO at all, so I dunno what functionality the gen8 provides. At home, iLO wouldn't be of much use to me.
I have various REAL Proliant DL servers and I always buy the iLO licenses for them, as having a full remote console for a remotely deployed server saves me a LOT of late night trips when things go sideways.

iLO would only be useful to me when I'm at work or out of the area and not at home. Realistically at work I do 98% of configuration via SSH (that's server and router/switch configuration), so who am I kidding I want IPMI on a microserver (for home). :-D
Dual GigE is nice, but I'd really prefer an Intel NIC! ;-) [ Almost all of the gently used Dell server gear my employer has is Broadcom based. Hence the wink smiley. ]

Right on. I'm somewhat spoiled with all the remote management/configuration that be done via IPMI/SoL. ( Which is why I'm asking about the iLO feature set the gen8's ship with. )

looks like the gne8 has two gigE ethernet ports, one shared with the iLO. The ethernet is a BCM5720 which I assume without looking up is a Broadcom thing.
