any experiences with centos 5/rhel 5 install? machine is rhel 6.1 certified laptop?
Why not install CentOS 6.3 instead? CentOS and RHEL are binary compatible.
Yes, but Centos 5 is needed on this project.

your project uses a laptop as the target ?
why would any new project require an OS thats approaching end of service life ?

yes, its best solution for mobility.

project is new, but software is old, so it only supports rhel 5/centos 5 without code modifications.

other solution might be installing centos 6 and virtualizing centos 5 on it.

thats what I likely would do, assuming this app really doesn't work on C6 with a bit of tweaking (installing the -compat libraries etc).
that and start looking immediately for a replacement for the software that hasn't been updated to run on newer OS's before its too late.
I guess I was a little premature about CentOS 5 being near EOL, I thought it was running out in another year, but it looks like they expect to support it until 2017, but the last full update will be early next year. however, the kernel at its base is from 2007, as are all its major subsystems.

RHEL5 is supported until April 2017 so it's not exactly approaching end of life (2020 if you buy the extended support cycle).

Is the latter also true for CentOS? I do not think so.

Yes, sorry, presumably lifespan for CentOS will match the standard Red Hat offering until 2017. The extended support is only available through Red Hat.
