Hello,
I've been reading the CentOS's FAQs, and saw this: How long will CentOS-4 updates be supported? We intend to support CentOS-4 updates until Feb 29, 2012.
Would someone tell me what will happen after that?

by 2012, CentOS Linux had better be doing most all of my work for me while whether i am at church, in the boat, or on the beach...

Correct ...
That is when the upstream provider stops doing updates ... so we also stop doing updates as well.
The entire CentOS-4 distro would then move to the vault (http://vault.centos.org)
By that time ... in 6 years ... there should be a CentOS-5 and CentOS-6 and CentOS-7 active (based on an 18 month release cycle ... that is dependent upon the upstream provider).

Regarding this, I know that CentOS 4 corresponds to RHEL 4 and CentOS 5 will correspond to RHEL 5, etc, but what do the minor version mean? As far as I am aware, there is no RHEL 4.0, 4.1 or 4.2. Also, you mention that the release cycle is 18 months. When does that put the scheduled release for version 5?

Sorry, had I read some of the other, more recent, posts before writing I would have known that there are 'update' releases for RHEL 4 that correspond to CentOS 4.1 and 4.2.

As you already mentioned ... in the CentOS X.Y notation:
X = major version (ie EL2, EL3, EL4) Y = update set (ie 3.6 is EL3 update 6, 4.2 is EL4 update 2, etc.)
Also, you mention that the release cycle is 18 months. When does that put the scheduled release for version 5?
The beta period for EL4 started on 27 Sep 2004 and EL4 was released upstream on 14 Feb 2005.
Just for the record, 18 months from 27 Sep 2004 is 27 Mar 2005 ... but I expect that EL 5 will probably be based on FC5 and not FC4. FC5 was delayed a couple months, so I would expect RHEL5 to be the same. If that is the case, expect an EL 5 beta to be released within a month of the release of FC5.
The current expected FC5 release date is 15 Mar 2006.
All that said, EL5 Beta 1 could be released as soon as 15 Mar 2006 ... it could also be delayed.
Thanks, Johnny Hughes
