Thanks your contribution, I too miss gnumeric. However, I get these errors and the installed gnumeric crashes on opening a gnumeric file:

Hm. That's interesting. It works for me, and I think we can find out why it works for me and not for you, if you want to spend some effort.
When I google for your error
I/O error : Attempt to load network entity
It is a widely discussed problem. Obviously, there is some RPM that exists on my system that does not exist on yours, or you are firewall-blocked from allowing the install to work in the way it intends. I really don't think this is a fault of the gnumeric RPM I provide.
Perhaps one approach is to find out if you have the docbook stuff installed. On the system where I built that RPM, I have:
$ rpm -qa | grep docbook docbook-dtds-1.0-30.1 docbook-utils-0.6.14-5.1 docbook-simple-1.0-2.1.1 docbook-style-xsl-1.69.1-5.1 docbook-slides-3.3.1-2.1.1 docbook-style-dsssl-1.79-4.1
From Googling, I also form the opinion that XML processing is related,
so lets compare versions:
]$ rpm -qa | grep xml xmlsec1-1.2.9-8.1 libxml2-2.6.26-2.1.2.1 xmlsec1-devel-1.2.9-8.1 xml-commons-1.3.02-0.b2.7jpp.10 xml-common-0.6.3-18 xml-commons-resolver-1.1-1jpp.12 libxml2-devel-2.6.26-2.1.2.1 libxml2-python-2.6.26-2.1.2.1 xml-commons-apis-1.3.02-0.b2.7jpp.10
Another possible check is to try to debug the gnumeric that you say crashes. Unfortunately, "crash" is a very vague term. Does the installed gnumeric find all of the required libraries? What do you see like this? Do you see any "missing" or "???"
$ ldd /usr/bin/gnumeric

Paul,
Thanks your contribution, I too miss gnumeric. However, I get these errors and the installed gnumeric crashes on opening a gnumeric file:

Dear Iain:
I've been googling more, found redhat bugzilla on the I/O error and network entity:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=440295
Are you by chance running the Server version of Centos 5.2 with the mis-matched versions of Dockbook mentioned in this bug report?
That would explain the trouble you see. I don't get that same error you see, so I can't say for sure if a system update does fix it. But it appears it might. I think also you should consider installing the gnome-doc-utils package I have, and check your xlst packages:
$ rpm -qa | grep xsl libxslt-devel-1.1.17-2.el5_1.1 openoffice.org-xsltfilter-2.3.0-6.5.1.el5_2 docbook-style-xsl-1.69.1-5.1 libxslt-1.1.17-2.el5_1.1

Would you please trim your replies?
Thank you.
