Hi,
I have found some advice on the web regarding battery draining, but no linux-specific information. Are there some steps to be taken to protect the harddrive? Unmounting file-systems?
I would appreciate any advice.

Boot a Live CD, umount any mounted filesystems, then run the battery down.
