CentOS 4.2 Server CD - i386 Released The single CD Server edition of CentOS 4.2/i386 has now been released.
It lets you setup a basic CentOS 4 system along with the server components. Anything else that is needed can then be installed via yum or up2date once the system is running. The resulting installed system is identical to a normal CentOS 4 install ( with yum and up2date ).
One important thing to keep in mind - this installer uses the stock i686 kernel - therefore i586 machines are not supported ( including MiniITX, ViaC3's, AMD K6' etc ). If you need to install on such machines, you will need to get the full distro.
Download it from the /centos/4/isos/i386/ directory on your local mirror or pickup the torrent.
We appreciate all feedback ( via http://bugs.centos.org/ ), including RFE's and Bug notices.
Enjoy!

I would like to install the minimal level of Centos, with yum & selinux on my servers during the basic install from CD with Anaconda and then use yum to install whatever application is major on that server, so that yum installs its dependencies only, thus keeping to the target of installing only what is needed on a server.
When you get to the package selection stage of the install scroll down to the bottom and select 'Minimal Install'.
I believe CentOS team released a CentOS 'Server CD', single CD for said 'minimal' installs. Recall something mensioned about installer using i586 or i686 kernel - Quick look through archive should show post in question.

Sean

I thought that is why the digest of that list is sent to this list.
so it is, I change my statement, "please read the digest's posted here" if you are not on the Announce list.
thanks for pointing this out Craig.

What about a PIII 550 Pentium...is it 586 or 686...sorry...dont know that ;-) Would the minimum CD support that?
Also, Karan said something about it installing server components...I have a query here...What server components? suppose I want to install only the base OS, selinux & INN...would I get more than what I want?...do I need to do anything specific with anaconda?
Please ./configure the reply for a complete dumbo ;-)
Regards to all. Sanjay.

P-III's are i686, would work fine.

When you run the installer, just select 'minimum' install from the packages selection menu, and then yum install inn once you have the system running. It should be pretty clean with very few other pkgs included.

Pentium Classic and Pentium MMX are i586 ... Pentium Pro, PII, PIII, P4, celeron, Pentium M are all i686.
yes the CD would support it

If you select the "Minimum" install (on the package page), you will get what we have defined as [Core] and [Base] in this file on the CD:
/CentOS/base/comps.xml
That file is mostly exactly like the RH one, except it has a couple things (like yum and createrepo) that RH doesn't have.
Please ./configure the reply for a complete dumbo ;-)
