I just saw the following in the release notes for the new firmware for the later 3ware cards;
Improved CIFS performance The firmware has been tuned to greatly increase performance with CIFS (Common Internet File System) protocol. However, this has resulted in performance with the Linux ext3 file system that is slower than earlier releases. We recommend that you use other Linux file systems, such as XFS.
So it looks like ext3 performance would be worse. What are they thinking? They are going to drive linux people away.

That is idiotic. I guess I won't be upgrading my firmware. Screwups like this really risk their strong following among Linux users.
There is NO WAY I'd use an unsupported file system on a production box.
Cheers,
so they boost MS file systems against Linux file systems? Are they nuts?

Sure we can avoid that firmware, but what if a later firmware fixes some bug that does affect everyone else? I'm sure that "fix" will be in it too since 3ware doesn't seem to keep forked firmwares.

If their product ceases to meet my needs, I'll cease specifying it for my server farms and cease recommending it here and on other forums. I suspect the decision to (a) release something that fixed a bug at the expense of the most widely used Linux filesystem and then (b) to explicitly steer people towards using an unsupported filesystem (at least by RedHat) instead of just fixing the problem will either be reversed or enjoy an appropriate response from the marketplace.
Cheers,

Wow, that's stupid. I guess we'll be switching to Adaptec cards...

I'd go LSI Logic before I'd let anything Adaptec near my systems
except, I don't get that app note... CIFS is a network protocol, like NFS (its really just an enhanced SMB), its not a disk file system. NTFS is the disk file system.

LSI Logic cards are really buggy in Linux, we've had nothing but problems with them.
really? I guess most of my experience with them is in the Unix (Solaris, etc) world, where they are rock solid, and are in fact Sun's SCSI vendor of choice.

We've been using an LSI SATA 150-6 card for a couple years now and it's worked really well. Maybe I got lucky with an older LSI card/firmware? Could you post a couple examples?

I don't have anything right now, mostly what I remember is scsi bus timeouts and problems formatting new partitions. It could also be an issue with the motherboards, I don't really have time to screw with it though. We bought some Adaptec SATA RAID cards to try out and they work without any issues. 3ware cards work great as well.

The trouble with adaptec RAID cards is that they just don't work....
and adaptec are less than useless at providing drivers or support...
I have a six port adaptec SATA RAID card which I got with an HP server, in the end I ditched it and went software RAID because the Adaptec card drivers just didn't work....
Additionally, CIFS is not a disk filing system, (as I believe has been said already) so I am not sure what 3WARE are getting at here,
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_systems
Following th CIFS link takes you straight to SMB as you might expect.....

And I just replaced adaptec's in a couple of HP servers here.
I just went to re-read the release notes, and now 9.4.1 doesn't show up on the downloads, and the release notes don't have the ext3 paragraph. I guess they do listen, and might have pulled it to re-do and re-release it. Either someone threw a major fit, or they read the boards.

I sent an email to their sales department, and I bet I'm not the only one... Maybe sales / support let the management know that there was a major backlash brewing... For hardware SATA RAID, 3Ware is the only brand I trust. They just work, and really do support Linux. Hopefully they won't remain silent on this - I suggested that they make an announcement in order to let Linux buyers know that they DO listen, and that Linux matters.

Maybe they're just pushing the dirt under the rug now?
(just wondering)

More like they are throwing the dirt, the rug, and anything connected with it into the river.
Thanks for the "head's up" on this.
