Hi; As a prerequisite for IBM's db2 Viper they say: "For RHEL, all available compat-libstdc ++ RPM-packages must be installed."
Can anyone please advise how to achieve this quickly via yum? (64bit software running on 64bit centos 4.3.)
Thanks; nat

You may want to consult the man page for yum, and/or the documentation at http://centos.org/docs/4/ about yum.
yum list compat* will show you the available compat packages. Install the ones you need.

Thanks. I didn't know that I can use regex patterns for yum. It's much simpler now.

I think there's some more, relating to plugins etc. Googling with advanced along the lines of
yum site:centos.org
IIRC will also get stuff mentioned in the lists (I'm thinking mostly about protect base ATM to keep non-base repos from munging your system).

Whew! By the time I finish the yum docs, a new yum will be here! tx nat

Nah! A quick peruse and spot the one that seems to be most *immediately* and *pervasively* to get the job done. Scan that one and refer to a s needed. Then make "spare" time and dive into the others. That's what I've done since I asked my first (two?) yum questions. It helped. I *hate* bothering others when the answer makes me appear lazy. Other folks are not so encumbered.
Likewise, when I offer help of *any* kind, I'll try and take the extra step to help dispel some of the "grumpiness" that comes through in the most terse replies... uh *most* of the time I'll take the extra step.
Plus, maybe I can impart a little guilt, thereby causing a Q *after* research rather than before by more folks! =:-O In my dreams, yeah!
There's been a couple new folks showed up and inundated the list for several days straight, until talk of "spoon feeding" began to surface. I always hope that my extra info will help folks avoid that.

Hey! You've mellowed in the last month or so. Only terseness now. IIRC, about 2 months ago it was terse and demeaning... ;-)) And I *fully* supported your attitude then and I support it now. I'm too old to wade through *constant* barrages of Q w/o any apparent research. Had to deal with that inside a big company for 18 years, don't have to put up with it now. And at my age, don't have that much time left! :-((
And to set the record straight, I'm sure I've been grumpier than you ... just maybe not here yet. That's 'cause I have 3 cups o' Java b4 entering idiot chair.
:->> 'Course if Karanbir continues to outlaw all humor, regardless of
length of thread, grumpiness is a natural side-effect! ;-)

Regardless, keep up the good work!

<sigh> since my Compuserve days (25+ years ago) I have been told to RTFM. But, I never gave that line to anyone I helped on line. Your point is well taken, however. In these days with man pages and google, I should really try that first. One thing about man pages; I wish they organized the options in categories of "most used", "seldom used" etc.
Anyhow, I really don't want to start a thread on this issue as I have a lot of reading to do! Have a nice one! -nat

<pedantic> Actually, you can't.
That is not regex, but glob pattern.
glob : compat* regex: compat.*
The \ is just an escape because of the shell. </pedantic>
This is particularly important to point out since apt actually uses regex, while yum uses glob.

If the software is an rpm, try yum localinstall (rpm name). Should pull any dependencies that are available.
