Hi:
I've tried to install centos 4.3 in a raid array, setuped on bios as mode "Adaptec". The chip is ICH7R but centos always sees 2 drives instead of the array that I create. I've contacted Supermicro support and they gave me this link ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/driver/SATA/Adaptec_ICH7R/Linux/Redhat/ , but the disk drivers I tried to use with centos 4.3 did not work, saying that the disk did not containt appropriate drivers for the hardware.
Have anyone here had similar problems? does centos 4.4 solves this issue?
I really need to install centos as an array... and as hardware RAID and not software RAID.
Best Regards, Ricardo

Then you should have purchased a hardware RAID card. What comes on the motherboard is in fact software RAID, it just uses a proprietary driver to do all the work. (Search the net for Fake RAID of FRAID).
If you can't purchase something like a 3ware card, your best bet is to use the software RAID that comes with Linux. Otherwise you're just asking for a world of hurt.

ICH7R is software raid anyways, faked in the BIOS.

The ICH7R is not a real raid controller. It is a software raid with bios level support or fakeraid. See http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html

Yep, I have ran into similar probs with adp94xx drivers from IBM/Adaptec. Quite a pain in the ass. The drivers endedup working, but took some trickery. I ended up getting the installer going, then switching to the second virtual terminal, mounting the .img disk, then manually insmod'ing the the kernel module. *Then* it actually found the disks, and the install could continue.

Lots of other people have covered the hardware-vs-software/fakeRAID stuff. Linux software RAID works great. Hotswap works well too if you are concerned about that.

Unless you've got a lot of time to screw around with it and troubleshoot failed drives down the line, it is MUCH more cost effective to just buy a 3Ware card. They simply work out of the box, work well, they're cheap, and perform very well. It just isn't worth the hassle of dealing with the software RAID bits for a production box. The first time you hose things with a kernel update you'll wish you spent the few hundred bucks on a real RAID card.
Cheers,

Ricardo,
I have a SuperMicro as well and could not get the Adaptec to work either. I purchased a MegaRAID SCSI 320-2X (532) and am in the process of doing some testing with it right now. So far it is working perfectly. I have it set up as RAID 1 for the operating system and RAID 5 for the database drives. Other reports I received on the Adaptec spooked me from using it.
Good Luck!!!

You have probably already seen all the other posts ... however I want to make sure everybody understands...
The RAID that is built onto the motherboards on almost all these chipsets _IS_NOT_HARDWARE_RAID_ ... any more than a win Modem is a real modem.
The RAID really is just software raid _WITH_A_PROPRIETARY_DRIVER_ .
The proprietary nature of that driver makes it much less stable than linux software raid.
So, as others have mentioned, buy a REAL hardware RAID card ... like vmware ... or use software RAID.
Also, as others have mentioned, please search for "fake raid" or "fraid" on google for more information.
Thanks, Johnny Hughes
Hi folks:
I've contacted Supermicro Europe Support, and they were awesome! They sent me the drivers for RHEL U3/U4 ... So I'll test them today... Hope it works!

walk away from those drivers..no..run away. That's fake raid. use either md for linux software raid or get a 3ware or areca..<G>

vmware ... 3ware ... ARGH :(
You are obviously quite correct ... thanks :P
ich7 is software raid in disguise. If you want hardware raid buy a true hardware raid card. There are many cards that are also software raid cards in disguise. Stick with areca, 3ware are the two most well known true hardware raid cards. LIS logic has some but i am not familiar with them. The list can inform you of others real hardware raid cards if you want more options.
