firefox-1.5.0.2-2.1.c4.centos.i386.rpm in the testing repo produces this error when running it as non-rrot and also as root
Firefox could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem.
How to reproduce this message :-
1. download and upgrade firefox-1.5.0.2-2.1.c4.centos.i386.rpm from the testing repo
2. erase the previous firefox 1.5.0.1 from centosplus and install the new one. It still gives this error message.

That's why it's in the "testing" repository :-P Johnny has been working with getting this package to build properly, and that's one of the trials. Once it's working properly it'll be moved to centosplus as an update to the firefox package there.

Yip i figured out that it was in there for testing and so i was duly providing some feedback.

cross posting is considered a waste, dont do it - testing and devel stuff is best handled in the centos-devel list, so keep it there.
thanks

It is fairly obvious that a handful of people are subscribed to centos-devel list but many more are likely to have tested the rpm in question.

Then they should subscribe to the -devel list and play by culturally acceptable rules. :-P

The feedback is very much welcomed, however in this case it was a touch premature. Excellent effort though. Thank you.

this isnt a released pkg. we're aware of this issue ( amongst others ) and working to get it out asap.

This has something to do with one or more extensions. Even with 1.5.0.1 I was having problems with firefox crashing on startup whenever an extension was added or removed. When I installed 1.5.0.2 from the testing repository I got the install.rdf message, so I tried uninistalling and re-installing all my extensions (except the default language packs and DOM inspector) and now the startup-time crashes have stopped.
I do have one problem which began with 1.5.0.1 and persists in 1.5.0.2, which is that occassionally when downloading a file, firefox crashes when opening the file in an external application. With 1.5.0.1 it would crash after starting the app, but in 1.5.0.2 it crashes before the app is launched. This doesn't happen consistently, and it's only happening to me on CentOS 4.3 -- I have 3.7 on another machine and external viewers work fine there. It seems to be related to chosing "Other..." from the "What should firefox do with this" dialog and then navigating to an alternate viewer -- I've never seen a crash when accepting the default application.

The problem is with the language packs ... this is also not working correctly on FC5 (which is where this package is coming from) ...
we will (of course) make the 1.5 Firefox available as soon as possible ... it may not have the language packs installed though.
It will then NOT need to be downloaded separately, but wil be yum upgradable ... which the current RPMS are NOT.
We want to get this out ASAP ... but it does not work now :)

Understand that the 1.5 firefox for FC5 (the first RH release of 1.5) is built to run with components (cairo, a newer pango) that are not in CentOS-4 ... it therefore requires some fairly significant changes from the source provided to work w/CentOS-4.

Funnily enough i saw the firefox complaints on fedora-list but along with the other fc5-related complaints, i thought it was fc5 only.
THe upstream developer's page (explaining the issue) cannot open possibly because of being linked to on the fedora-list.

Since this is already posted in the main list, we have fixed the issues with the language packs (including 2 that were still present in the new version) ... and the version:
firefox-1.5.0.2-3.c4.centos is released in CentOSPlus for the i386 and x86_64 arches.

I see the same crash using firefox and thunderbird both starting with version 1.5 using the standard mozilla.org distribution. For the mozilla.org packages the crash happens every time I select to open the file using another application than the default. The crash happens just after the file selection dialog is closed and before the application is launched. This happens in CentOS 4.x and Mandrake 10.1 but not on distributions with newer gtk.

can you confirm this problem persists with the newst 1.5.0.2-3.c4 from the CentOS Plus repo on a standard CentOS4 install ? I dont seem to be able to reproduce this issue at all.
Sorry, I've just installed FC 5 on my desktop machine. The only CentOS installations I have now are on servers without X.

I can confirm that it still happens, though while testing it I got some more details.
The circumstances required appear to be (1) that after navigating to the external application in the file browser, you double-click on the application file rather than selecting the file and then clicking on "Open", and (2) that there is more than one tab open (in at least one window) at the time the external app is used. Whether the Web Developer extension is also involved I'm no longer sure -- I don't have time right now to go through that exercise again, but will try later if it would be helpful.

Do you / did you by any chance have the Web Developer extension installed? I tried uninstalling all my extensions (except language packs) and then re-installing them one by one, and I can only get the crash with any reliability when Web Developer is installed. I've corresponded with the author, but he says WD doesn't do anything that affects file download or running of external applications (and he's not a linux guy so he didn't have any other useful suggestions for me except to try again with a newly-created profile).
