Is network manager available during Gnome login?
Users (using laptops etc) need to authenticate and login having their home directory on NFS using autofs.
However this is not possible when there is no valid network connection present; either using Wireless LAN or VPN

Thanks but that creates a chicken or the egg sort of problem no?
You need wlan to successfully log in to configure wlan...
What I am curious about is using network manager before one logs in to gnome.
Like configure/connect a wlan and then perhaps start/connect VPN and then log in.
