When looking for RPMs for CentOS 4.1 outside of the yum CentOS repositories, do I choose the version of a product which says for FC4, or what, if there is no specific version mentioned for CentOS ?

RHEL4 and, I guess, FC3 should work !
See Dag's "el4" repo, there are a lot of RPM available there (even if some aren't very up to date).
Regards, Gilles.

Which ones are not up to date ? I follow freshmeat to now about new releases, but not all developers announce releases on freshmeat. It's impossible to visit 2000+ websites to see whether something has been updated.
Update contributions are welcome too. If you know about an updated piece of software that we package the best practice is to announce it yourself on freshmeat. :)

I already sent you a (private) mail about this and also to Matthias (as his name appear in the "Packager" tag) for a particular package I use.
I really appreciate the work you've done on these repos and that sentence wasn't made to criticize your work or something like that.
I would be really happy to talk to you in private (as I don't think it is the place here for such a thread).
Kind regards, Gilles.
PS: Sorry for my english :-/

Well, I'd interpreted it as feedback, and all feedback is welcome. Your private mail has an interesting suggestion for improving the website to invite people to give feedback more easily.
So I'm glad to have asked the question :)

And me, glad to point you to a great way to do it ;)
Thanks again,
Gilles.

FC3 as opposed to FC4 if both exist ?
OK, I will look for RHEL4 first anyway.
See Dag's "el4" repo, there are a lot of RPM available there (even if some aren't very up to date).
Thanks, noted.

I would NOT recommend using FC3 rpms (though that is the closest FC to CentOS-4).
The repos where you should look are:
1. Dag's el4: http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/FAQ.php#B4
2. KBS-CentOS-Extras: http://centos.karan.org/
3. Dries el4: http://dries.ulyssis.org/rpm/
Only install packages for el4 / CentOS-4 ... otherwise you risk breaking things due to the shared library differences.
See Dag's "el4" repo, there are a lot of RPM available there (even if some aren't very up to date).
Dag's stuff for el4 is usually very up to date.

I didn't say *all* packages are outdated :)... I've just sent a private mail to Dag to explain more about this !
Dag repo is really great and I use it on all my CentOS boxes (and always recommend it to my friends ;).
Gilles.
