and i am getting different sizes:

Those are both smaller than they should be.

i haven't been tracking which mirror i'm hitting, so i don't know which file came from where.

Please double check which mirror you're grabbing from when you get the source, and check to be sure you don't have a proxy interfering in your download. If it is broken on the mirror, I want to know, but at this point, I have to lean toward something on your end, no offense.

now i get a good signature, but the size still doesn't match what you indicated:

i see that the size i have is what all the mirrors now seem to be reporting.
