Why are there so many Fedora 6 packages in CentOS 5? Are there something wrong with the build system?

This is an upstream issue that is duplicated down in centos. Mostly it's because PNAELV doesn't seem to care much about proper dist tags. There've been several heated exchanges about this on various lists, and if I recall correctly it's a fairly sore spot for some of the RPMForge folks.

Because there are so many fc6 packages in RHEL ... please look here:
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Client/en/os/SRPMS/
and here
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Server/en/os/SRPMS
We didn't write it, we just build it.

I don't know for sure, yet it is my understanding that "in general"
Fedora 6 becomes RedHat 5
Fedora 5 becomes RedHat 4
Etc etc
I could be off though

you are. RHEL4 is based on Fedora Core 3 RHEL5 is based on Fedora Core 6 RHEL6 will be based on Fedora 9 most likely

Oops...
I knew it was one way or the other...
I went the wrong way as I wanted to get the email off quick...
Oops...
Must be that CUBIC BUTTLOAD OF VITAMINS I ate with the CUDIC BUTTLOAD OF COFFEE I drank today so I could install CentOS 5 on a CUBIC BUTTLOAD OF SERVERS.

Yes for the most. So it seen that RH has some unclean .spec files, where the dist tag is wrong.

Quite a bit off. Fedora Core 3 roughly became RedHat Enterprise 4, and RedHat 9 Roughly became Enterprise 3. I think Enterprise 2.1 dates back to RedHat 7.x.
But you were right on with Core 6 going to Enterprise 5.

Kewl, so the number of correct answers I had were inversely proportional to the new CUBIC BUTTLOAD term

RHEL 5 being based on Fedora Core 6 has alot of packages that have hardcoded disttag values in them. as a result there are many packages in RHEL5 and CentOS5 that look like they are from FC-6 in RHEL's case they are im sure that the CentOS guys rebuilt them

Upstream has used those packages untouched, so they trickled down to CentOS.

There is nothing wrong with the build system. This is something that has been discussed previously. It is the way Upstream provided the packages.
Sorry you if you get this twice, but the first bounced and it was top posted anyway and needed to bet rectified. So there's that.
Hope This Helps (HTH)

It is a matter of duplicating upstream. The packages were rebuilt on centOS-5, but have the upstream tag.
Name : netpbm Relocations: (not relocatable) Version : 10.35 Vendor: CentOS Release : 6.fc6 Build Date: Sat Jan 6 20:41:37 2007 Install Date: Thu Apr 12 16:22:40 2007 Build Host: builder5.centos.org

With the way the list was hounding for a release, do you think they had the time to edit all the packages from upstream? ;-D
