'dag' thanks for the help. i've been able to download all the headers.
now i'm in a dilemma. i'm usig an i686 arch. i see that that centos 3.4 is for i386. can i still upgrade to 3.4 or do i've to wait till i get an upgrade for i686.

There is no i686 version of CentOS. Only the kernel and glibc are i686. Apparently the gains from compiling/running everything for i686 don't weigh up against the work. Lots have been said, little has been proven.
So CentOS 3 U4 should be ok.
