Last night, a visitor was using my daughters box and she was using mine. The web site she was on wanted Adobe Flash or a newer version of Adobe Flash. At that moment, I forgot that I have the Adobe Yum Repository installed. I downloaded the .rpm file from Adobe and when I tried to install it, got a message that a later version is already installed. First thought was the other thread, about Firefox and Adobe for .pdf files. Is this a glitch in the latest version of Firefox we are now using? My box is fully updated. In Add Ons, for Plug Ins, I see Shockwave Flash v. 9.0 r124 and the rest is Mplayer stuff. TIA

I think you should dump that old version (if you're CentOS 5.x?) and get it updated to the 10.2 Why your plkuginreg.dat has 9 while your rpm shows 10.x, I couldn't guess.
However, mine is wrapped.

Your's is from rpmforge now. I don't have experience with it, so I can't offer if that's the problem. Mine came from the adobe site, installed flawlessly and worked OOTB (Out Of The Box).
With both having the same rel/ver, I'm not sure what's different about the rpmforge version.

Well, ATM, all I know is that the pluginreg.dat has a version that doesn't match what rpm shows. I would get those consistent first. If it were me (being comfortable with "risky behavior"), I'd uninstall the rpm, make sure plugins don't include it anymore (if not, we'll have to think since it says "don't edit") and re-install. Rpmforge is probably OK, but the adobe site would also be OK AFAICT from my experience.

It did on my daughter's box too. Mine died today. The reason I was having the mouse freeze, and other symptoms, on my Dell Dimension 2400 box, is that the motherboard is damaged. I ran the Dell Diagnostics on it, Sunday, and it was supposedly OK. Dell wants about US$237 for a new motherboard, delivered to our house. I think I will wait, until I can buy a very low end box, without a monitor, and everything will have a guarantee. I am going to fix up our backup IPCop Router/Firewall box and use that one, in the meantime. Slow, but it should work....

TigerDirect.com has a $99 box available, and it's pretty low end, but it might suit your purposes.

Mark: Hmmmm. If I was in the USA, I'd go for that, in a minute. But, we are down here in South America (much closer to Miami, FL than you are!) , so there is a problem with transportation and customs. However, I wonder how much it weighs and if it is *very* light, maybe I could have it shipped down here. I will look at TigerDirect.com and check it out. Thanks for the idea! I'm planning to remove the HD, DVD-ROM, CD-RW drive from my box, probably tomorrow, and transplant them into the old box. The only thing about the Dell boxes is that they use some proprietary parts. For example, the power supply connectors are non standard. Dell is great for support, but bad in a situation like this, where you need the proprietary part and it costs an arm and a leg. Generic is better for cheap replacement parts! Now, I have another idea, along the same line as the Tiger Direct box. There is something called mercadolibre.com.co in Colombia, a poor imitation of ebay and maybe I can find a box like TigerDirect has, there, or in an ad in a Bogota newspaper. Great idea! Thanks! As I wrote a couple of nights ago, if I was in the USA, I would order one of those, without giving it a second thought. Wonderful! Next Monday morning, I am going to go to a shopping center in Cali, where there are *lots* of stores that sell computer stuff and see if I can come up with something like that.
We have four (4) Dell Dimension boxes and their support here is *SUPER*, but they use proprietary cases, motherboards and power supplies. Their quote of USD$237 for a new motherboard is probably not something I am going to follow up on. The box is running most of the time, which is puzzling, because it is an intermittent problem.
My wife just made me an offer I may refuse: She told me to go to the Dell web site for Colombia and look for a new, inexpensive box there. They have one with Ubuntu Linux on it, for about US$700 with a monitor and 3 year in house warranty. Maybe..... :-)

Just a shot in the dark . . . look at the electrolytic can caps on the mainboard. If any of them are "puffy" - the top is domed, not flat - that could be your problem and an easy fix. I've run into this issue on several different devices.

Toby: Interesting you should mention that and thank you for the URLs. This morning, I made my expedition to the shopping center in North Cali, where there are many tiny stores that sell computers and parts. The one I settled on (After going into 8 or 10 stores I knew the 2nd one was the best of them) has a man who fixes mainboards all day. If he can fix the mainboard, the maximum charge is about USD$37. That's USD$200 less than Dell Latin America quoted me for a new mainboard, delivered to our house.... Also, he can check out the power supply for me.
Also got prices on a new tower, mainboard (for Socket 775), Celeron CPU and RAM in the same place; along with the price for a new DVD burner for my daughters box.
I plan to take my box there, on the 5th of January, to get him to look at the mainboard and diagnose it. Thanks! Lanny

While you are looking on the Dell site, sometimes they have some good deals under the "Reconditioned" systems. Most of them have had nothing more than someone got the system and sent it back within the 30 days because they didn't like it. They are usually at least 20% cheaper.

Scott: Thank you for that idea. I will go to the Dell web site for Colombia again and see if they offer those reconditioned systems down here. The other night, my wife indicated that I should take her up on this, while she is in a good mood. :-) As I just wrote to Toby, this morning, I went to a place where they may be able to fix the mainboard in this box. I plan to take it there, on the 5th of January, to see if it can be fixed. If not, I will probably buy something like Mark (MHR) suggested last week (bare bones box from TigerDirect.com), but get it here, because ordering from the states is a PITA and if I do, there's no warranty down here and I am out of luck, if there's a problem. Due to some problem at OpenDNS.com I haven't been able to get to the Dell Support Forum since this came up last week. Lots to like about Dell stuff, but the fact that they (and other manufacturers) use some proprietary components (tower, power supply and mainboard) is a "minus" if one needs to buy a replacement. Happy Holidays! Lanny

I hadn't thought about blaming someone else for this problem, but, thank you for the idea! :-) Actually, the box has always had a UPS with automatic voltage regulation and it is our newest box, the 2nd one I'd won in a raffle, but, it's almost 4 years old. My backup box is an old 200MHz Pentium w/96MB. Maybe there is a local dealer or private party that has a good old one you can pick up $Cheap.
When I'm using the old backup with IPCop, I see no performance difference. Should suit your needs if only IPCop is the purpose. And maybe the seller would let you try it first.

BTW, several years ago when I first started using IPCop, I ran some tests. My cable provider was a Road Runner (5Mb/s?). All configurations used 10Mb/s ISA ethernet cards of various brands, coaxial cable. Test sites the same and time frames about the same for each download test. Memory about the specific numbers below is fuzzy, but tshould be in the ballpark.
IBM 486/DX2 66MHz Aptiva ISA bus - 477MB/s The Pentium mentioned above (PCI bus) - >= 533 MB/s AMD K3+ 380MHz (running 369MHz) 256MB PCI bus, PC-Chips M571 mobo - >= 599MB/s
Now with RR Turbo and burst mode for first few MB of download, mix of gigabit and 10/100 twisted pair network, I've seen >= 1.2MB/s with the AMD setup and >=900 MB/s with the pentium.
I wanted to mention this so you'd know what kind of flexibility you have if you run up on a really good deal.

Heh, yeah. When I first got DSL I used a Pentium Pro 200 with 10baseT cards as my router / firewall / infrastucture services / bastion host / etc. At the time it was perfectly fine; 1.5Mbit DSL was easily within its limits. Today with Verizon FIOS I get 20Mbit/s download speeds... faster than my LAN used to be! Eep! Today I use a Linksys WRT54G (running Tomato) for my router/firewall and a seperate dual core Pentium D 3Ghz CentOS 4 machine for the rest of the stuff, as well as file server, backup server etc.

When I looked at it, while using M$ Windows, Device Manager showed everything OK. I guess that's why when I ran the Dell Diagnostics on the box, Sunday, it got an OK. Intermittent...
Mark (mhr) really gave me a super idea last night. I will buy him a cup of Colombian Coffee or a Beer, if possible! A bare bones computer. I looked on tigerdirect.com and the thing even comes with a Celeron 2.0 GHz CPU and 1 GB of RAM and a 450 watt P.S. Needs a fan for the CPU, which is not included. Problem is shipping it down here (13.35 pounds according to their web site) and paying for it with a wire transfer, etc. (Their web site says they only accept Wire Transfers for International Orders). It has a PC Chips P53G v.1.0, LGA 775 motherboard, with a VIA Chipset, that I hope will work with Linux...... US$99.99. Something like that would save me a lot of time and work and I would still have our backup IPCop box ready, if I need it. I am going to try to find something like that here in Colombia, which would be a lot easier than buying from TigerDirect.com in Miami. Am in very good shape and very grateful that I was able to copy most or all of my stuff, after this problem began. Backups increase the level of relaxation.... :-)
