From the release notes i can read :
"Note that the minimum RAM required to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.92 has been raised to 1GB; the recommended RAM is 2GB. If a machine has less than 1GB RAM, the installation process may hang."
Is it a joke/mistake ? :-O 1GB !!!
I tested installation process with 256M / Celeron 600, seems to work ...)

tested on a PIII 256MB ram no problems so far
I installed Cent OS 5 beta on an old machine with no trouble. The machine has an old slot 1 motherboard with an AMD 500 mghrtz processor, 343mb of ram. The video card is an old trident 3D blade AGP card. The card has only either 16 or 32mb of ram, but it's able to put out 1024X768 resolution, true color 24bit. The hard drive is an 80gig. The ethernet card is a 3com, and the sound card is a sound blaster 16bit. The install went without any problems, but it did take about 2.5 hours to complete. I will say this though, the install looked a lot like a Fedora core install. Cent OS 4 reminded me of a red Hat 9 install, OS 5 reminds me of a Fedora install. To me it looks a lot like core 6. So far the machine has been running smoothly. I haven't had any problems so far. Who knows, that may change as the machine continues to run. Since it is derived from core 6, that is to be expected.

The Pedant says that would be Slot A. Slot 1 is an Intel setup of about the same era.

Actually no. I have run into several cases of doing large installs or adding extra repositories during the installation where the installer will just hang if you do not have 1 GB of ram. These are issues that I think will be fixed upstream for 5.1/5.2 timeframe.
What I have found so far:
Text Install: 256 MB of ram will work. 128MB will not. Graphic Install: 256MB of ram will install minimal system.
As you add more packages to the mix, you will need to increase the memory of the minimal system.

So install the CentOS 5 server CD (that I hope will come) and install the rest with yum. :)
But it is crazy that it needs more than 256MB to install... esp. in text mode.

Probably it's yum that is the problem. Anaconda now uses yum.
Upgrading my laptop (C1200, 256 Mb) from FC3 to 5 took a good twelve hours, then performed so badly I replaced 128 Mbytes of RAM with 512.
