I only now joined the list, hello all!
I saw in the MARC archives that the release of CentOS 4.4 was discussed, and promised to be about 2 weeks after the release by RH. Since the RH announcement was on Aug 10, I hope we can start downloading by Aug 24?

Humm, I really should let the developers answer this one, but .. oh heck ..
I would hardly call it a "promise", even tho that 2 weeks delay is the past average. But I we stand a good chance of having 4.4 avaliable sometime between 25th and 28th. That is where I would bet my money.

We would be ready to release CentOS-4.4 by the 24th ... However, there is one other consideration, and that is the release date of CentOS-3.8.
The upstream provider did not publicly release the GFS files for 3.8 onto their FTP server and the 3.8 team is looking at their release plan with this problem.
We do not want to release 3.8 and 4.4 at the same time due to server load for rsyncs and updates.
We will probably hold off the 4.4 release until 3.8 has been released and server load has stabilized. This is normally one week.
So 3.8 should be released in the next couple days ... and 4.4 should be about a week after that. If server loads allow it, we may release 4.4 a little earlier than 1 week after the 3.8 release.
Thanks, Johnny Hughes

What's the rationale behind prioritizing 3.x over 4.x?

I'm sure they have a good reason. Maybe 3.8 has a larger user base right now.

3.8's been out longer upstream? Is a good reason required? Centos4 lost the coin toss?
Hey, I can toss out speculative answers as well as anyone. I am just curious as to the actual rationale.

That 3.8 was released upstream before 4.4.

Which makes plenty of sense. Thanks.

Will the security updates (if there's any ) will be released before the 3.8 and 4.4 release ?
