Why do people bother sending removal requests ? Your requests are as annoying to others as being part of this mailing list is to you! If you're so dumb as to not know how to unsubscribe, why did you subscribe to this mailing list!! ?

Its also strange that people are on the list when they dont want to be - every subscription request hasto be confirmed via a click through and they have all done that.
most odd.
Can we have a separate closed list that only listed mirror admin's are subscribed to?

that is supposed to be this list!
Thoughts on how we might be able to close / clean this up a bit more are welcome!
Maybe create a new list called centos-mirror-admin, then only allow the mirror admin email address associated to join. This can be likely automated.
For the fringe situation where more than one admin email address might be needed for a mirror, then other email addresses can be added, but only if associated with an existing mirror. They would also need a separate approval of the existing mirror admin before joining.
Overall it shouldn't add very much additional work for the list admin's.
Requests to add a new mirror just come through to this existing list.
Do you think this might work?

I need to lower traffic from this list too. Reading and deleting emails from this list takes too much time for me.
If it's not possible, please add me to an list, where I can get necessary information about mirroring and I will unsubscribe from this list.
Fedora's mirror list has incomparably lower traffic like this list. 90% of Fedora's list content is interesting for me. 90% of this list's content is NOT interesting for me.

Jan, why not just setup a rule that filters all CentOS mirror emails to a different view/folder. Surely, like me, you find most of the list content irrelevant - so, filter and handle automatically.

1) Figure out what is going on with all the subscriptions from people that obviously don't want to be here.

Mass unsubscribe won't work unless you figure out how these people got subscribed in the first place. They must have clicked a link to confirm it at some point as well as entering their email address to get the email in the first place.

The only thing I can think of is they fell asleep on the keyboard or someone beat their head off the keyboard and it coincidentally punched in the subscribe page and their email address. That's the most probably cause I can come up with.

Why so many unsubscribe craps here?
Weird. No other mailing lists have this problem.
On 08.03.2013 01:16, John R. Dennison wrote:

That is the problem. There is nothing strange going on in Mailman land (as I've stated a few times).
Someone is using/has been using the mail interface to subscribe mail addresses to the list (and probably adding their spam to the bottom of that mail, hoping that mailman will also include the complete subscription mail when going to step 2).
Then comes step 2: Mailman asks people if they have subscribed. Ignore that mail and you won't see another (except you get another mail from step 1). BUT: You did not want to be on that mailing list. And what is it about that subscription?
So you open up your mail client, replying with a harsh mail, saying you don't want to be on that list, telling people to unsubscribe you.
By doing so, you leave the subject intact. And hit "Send Mail". Mailman sees that mail, looks for the magic in there, and it is all there. Et voilà, you have subscribed yourself.
- Fix the problem as determined from above.

Yes, that might be worth a discussion, I don't see any other "escape mechanism" at the moment. Except list moderation, but I don't see anyone really having the time for that.
Ralph
here is a thought...
can you make the list moderated for anyone thats not a listed mirror admin contact (and centos team ofc) so that this junk gets filtered?
its my understanding that this list is only for mirror admins and prospective mirror admins, i wonder how many people have possibly also subscribed to this list thinking they get some "insider information" about mirrors or centos releases?

The contact mail addresses and the addresses people are subscribed with do not always match - so that is not really a great way to go. At the moment we moderate the complete list, which is some work, but stops the junk.

Can somebody check if his email addresses is actually on the list? Maybe somebody else was subscribed with an email address X on the list a while back, then that email address got forwarded to his email address for some reason. Now if he tries to actually unsubscribe with HIS email address, the system says that a confirmation mail was sent, but actually it won't send anything because his email address is not on the list. And he doesn't know what the original email address is, because it doesn't appear anywhere. Maybe in a header somewhere?
