It will depend on youboot loader. It could be that the kernel lives in NAND.

Unfortunately, that is device specific, and as I mentioned, I don't own 
a Cubie.

You can find installation guides for RS here:

If cubie is similar to any of those, you should be able to adapt the 
process.

Does it use uboot? If so, can you interrupt the boot and look at 
printenv for clues?
