Mas foi do nada? Tenta bootar com um kernel anterior. Se bootar de algum 
jeito testa o hd com o comando badblocks -v /dev/sdx.
Se não conseguir baixa um cd de emergência tipo esse: 
http://www.sysresccd.org

Aí você pode testar de tudo com ele. Testa também a memória.
