You're 100% right, but in a lot of cases there's simply no way around 
it. Some distributions ship complete garbage, for example the 
methusaleh OpenLDAP packages that were used in RH-based distributions 
up to RH9, which they had dragged by its hair all the way from the RH 
7.x versions...
