[CentOS] is apt/synaptic OK?

Apt has issues with multi-arch support and a few other things, so most
people use yum instead. The syntax for yum is similar to apt, so it
should be reasonably easy for you to pick up. Many of the external
repositories you'll find use yum heavily. If you're not completely
comfortable with yum, there's documentation for it on the centos site,
and there's a gui called yumex that is available also.
