[CentOS] Centos as a desktop, advisable?

No. Centos follows RHEL. So whatever RHEL gets is what Centos gets. 
Unless you use the Centos Plus repository of course in which case the 
latest productivity software is quite likely.

If you managed with Redhat 9, you should with Centos 4/5....
