[CentOS] rpm spec files for ruby

I am now getting this:

RPM build errors:
    Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.49488 (%build)
[byrnejb at xen01 SPECS]$ ll /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby
total 8
drwxr-xr-x  5 root root 4096 Sep  7 12:14 1.8


Since /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby evidently exists, why am I being told that
it does not?
