One of the things I always do after patching a box is do an 'updatedb', followed by 'locate rpmsave' and 'locate rpmnew'. Then I resolve the differences. The other suggestion comes from a recent experience I had when updating a box running cacti. Did the upgrade, then cacti broke completely. Turns out that I didn't have the default fonts that cacti expected. I ended up having to install dejavu-lgc-fonts from rpmforge to resolve it. Why do I bring this up? Because cacti depends upon rrdtool, just like mrtg... -I
