When creating the VM, do not mark it as RHEL/CentOS, just create a standard VM and then install it via the ISO. VMWare Player and now-no-longer-supported Server etc. have some "user-friendly" features which assumes things which you don't need. Once the OS is installed, install the VMware tools separately.
